The primary objective of WHOCOUNTS is to collect and analyse data on those currently ‘missing’ from income surveys used to construct official statistics on poverty and disadvantage. Thesuccessful candidate will devise their own project within this remit to better account for the outcomes of people that are oftenunderrepresented in existing data infrastructure, or poorly served through current policy interventions and analysis in Europe. In addition to their project, the successful candidate will:
- Support analysis of adjusted and unadjusted datasets toexamine poverty trends, profiles and determinants.
- Collaborate with the rest of the project team on research and dissemination activities.
- Contribute towards authorship of research outputs.
- Carry out additional academic or administrative dutiesassociated with the project.
- Support the organisation of academic events and seminarsduring the project.
The PhD will be carried out at the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB) which offers excellent facilities, a dynamicresearch environment and opportunities for career development.They will be based in the Faculty of Political Science and Sociologyand affiliated to the Institute of Government and Public Policy (IGOP).
The successful candidate will start between September and
December 2025 depending on their availability and residencystatus. The funded post is available for 3 years without the option of extension. A dedicated training budget is also available to supportthe professional development of post-holders.
Job position requirements (skills/languages/required experience)
• Hold a Masters degree in a relevant field (such as Social Policy, Demography, Sociology, Political Science or a related discipline within the Social Sciences) by the start date of the post. (E)
•Knowledge of applying quantitative methods in social science research, drawing on statistical programmes such as STATA, R and SPSS. (E)
•Ability to work independently, use your initiative and collaborate effectively as part of a larger project team. (E)
•Excellent organisation and time-management skills to be able to complete tasks in a timely manner. (E)
•Excellent written communication, presentation and interpersonal skills. (E)
•Strong command of English to collaborate with wider project team. (E)
•Familiarity with debates within poverty analysis and/or comparative social policy. (D)
•Familiarity with live debates surrounding the measurement of poverty and living standards. (D)
Gross salary €21.000 the first 2 years, the third year €22.500 ( Gross annual). S ocial security.
Eligibility criteria:
• Academic record – 30
Master’s degree in Social Policy, Demography, Sociology, Political Science or a related discipline within the Social Sciences 30; Generic Master’s degree 5
• Relevant research experience – 25
Demonstrable autonomy in conducting research. Interest in poverty, social policy, measurement and/or quantitative social science. Familiarity with transnational databases 25; Minimal experience in research autonomy and relevant research interests. No familiarity with transnational databases 5
English B2 5, English C1 or higher 10
Knowledge of the application of quantitative methods in social sciences 10; Minimal knowledge of the application of quantitative methods in social sciences 5
