The MESON (Madrid Evolved STars Outflows Network) research group , funded by the Spanish AEI / MICIU, is pleased to announce an upcoming postdoctoral position in 2025. The selected candidate will contribute to the projects "AGB and post-AGB Circumstellar Envelopes : Companion's Role In ShaPing Nebulae of Evolved StarS (CRISPNESS)" (PID2023-146056NB-C21) led by Drs. J. Alcolea and M. Santander (OAN, IGN), and "AGB and Post-AGB Circumstellar Envelopes : Multidiagnostic Insights and Bias Mitigation" (PID2023-146056NB-C22) led by Dr. C. Sánchez Contreras (CAB, CSIC-INTA).

Research Field :

The research will focus on the study of the physical and chemical properties of circumstellar envelopes around low-to-intermediate mass evolved stars, including Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) stars, post-AGB stars, and Planetary Nebulae (PNe).

Key Responsibilities :

  • Calibration, data reduction, and analysis of interferometric mapping (millimeter-wavelength and / or NIR / MIR) and / or optical / NIR spectroscopic data (long-slit / IFU) of AGBs / pPNe / PNe.
  • Modeling the continuum and spectral line emissions from these sources, including dust, molecules, atomic, and / or ionized gas.
  • Active involvement in formulating and drafting new proposals for innovative investigations into structures critical for jet-launching and the role of binaries.

Desired Expertise :

Candidates must have a good research record and they should possess, or be in the process of obtaining by 2025, a Ph.D. in Astrophysics or Physics.

Experience in the following areas is highly desirable :

  • Research focus on evolved stars.
  • High-resolution interferometry : (sub)mm-wavelengths and / or midinfrared.
  • Familiarity with software such as CASA and GILDAS.
  • Familiarity with tools for reducing and analyzing optical spectroscopy (long-slit and / or IFU).
  • Radiative transfer modeling.

How to Apply :

Interested candidates who meet some of the above criteria are invited to submit a Letter of Intent and a CV to any of the project PIs :

Deadline : Please submit your Letter of Intent by October 18th, 2024.
