A leading company in satellite communications, part of the SpaceRISE consortium, seeks a Payload Engineer in Madrid. This role involves supporting the successful design and implementation of telemetry systems for a telecommunications satellite project. The candidate will utilize their extensive experience in satellite payloads and oversee various critical engineering tasks in a dynamic environment.

Formación

  • 10 years experience in a similar position required.
  • Experience in managing large EU and ESA projects is essential.
  • Knowledge in geostationary and LEO communication payload architectures.

Hispasat, as part of the SpaceRISE consortium, is responsible for the technical implementation and ensuring the success of the IRIS² project, leveraging its extensive experience in satellite communications. This collaboration is essential to provide secure and reliable high-performance communication solutions to the European Union and its member states.

To be part of this project, we are looking for a Payload Engineer whose responsibilities will be as follows:

Activities:

  • Support the definition, design, development, and oversight of a telecommunications satellite constellation program in the area of Repeater and Antennas (Payload).
  • Support the definition, design, and development of telecommunications systems based on satellite technology.

Responsibilities:

  • Participation in Satellite Mission Definition activities, system specification definition, and contract negotiations.
  • Preparation and participation in payload unit, subsystem, and system design, manufacturing, and testing review meetings.
  • Follow-up and review of payload design, development, manufacturing, and testing at unit, subsystem, and system levels.
  • Preparation and participation in satellite launch campaigns.
  • Preparation and participation in satellite In Orbit Test Campaigns.
  • Support for Payload on-orbit health status follow-up.
  • Preparation of weekly reports of activities.

Minimum requirements:

  • Master’s Degree in Telecommunication Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics, or similar.
  • 10 years of experience in a similar position with hands-on experience or exposure in payload procurement, equipment manufacturing, or in-orbit operations in GEO and/or LEO.
  • Experience in managing large EU and ESA projects.
  • Programming skills (Python, Matlab, or similar).

Knowledge in geostationary and LEO communication payload architectures and functional operations, including:

  • RF and microwave engineering expertise, including analog signal chain design, high-power amplification, frequency conversion, filtering, and RF chain technologies.
  • Strong competencies in Digital Signal Processing (DSP), ASIC technology, active antennas, onboard digital processors, software-defined radio payloads, and 5G standards.
  • Additional knowledge areas include optical equipment, link budgets, repeater RF performance measurement, integration and testing at equipment, subsystem, and system levels, in-orbit testing, quality control, and basic satellite platform engineering principles.

Recommendable qualities:

  • Highly collaborative, capable of building relationships across all levels and functions.
  • Assertive in handling complex situations.
  • Native to an EU member state and willing to undergo EU secret clearance.
  • Fluent in English; additional European languages are assets.

Location:

  • Madrid, with facilities and/or resident positions at platform and payload manufacturer sites, ESTEC, European Commission, satellite manufacturer premises, launch base, and satellite IOT station as required.

Ability to provide 24/7 on-call support during satellite system and payload/platform testing.
