Offer Description

The Science and Technology Park Foundation (FCPCT) of the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPGC) - Spain offers one PhD researcher position (ICP1 MECES 4) to work part-time in the EU TWINNEDBYSTARS project.

The University Institute of Tourism and Sustainable Economic Development (TIDES), belongs to the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPGC). It is a research institute that aims to develop outstanding tourism research, generating and circulating scientific knowledge, and integrating itself into international tourism networks of excellence. In addition, it provides education, training and raises awareness to improve the development of tourism. Finally, it applies the knowledge generated to promote the improvement of economic, social and environmental tourism development in tourist destinations.

TWINNEDBYSTARS project has been funded by EUROPEAN MARITIME, FISHERIES AND AQUACULTURE FUND (EMFAF), through the Grant Agreement number 101124900, signed by the European Commission on 10/08/2023 and in which ULPGC is coordinator of the consortium. The estimated end date of the project is 30/09/2026.

The EU-funded TWINNEDBYSTARS project aims at speeding up the implementation of digitalisation, circular economy practices, and innovation in SMEs working in marine and coastal environments in EU ORs’ (Azores, Madeira, Canary Islands and Martinica).

The University will recruit the best candidate following the recommendations of the European Charter for Researchers and the Code of Conduct for the Recruitment of Researchers. The job offer will be published through a wide range of portals. The evaluation of candidates and their selection criteria will be aligned with the ULPGC policies on equal opportunities. Selection and hiring procedures will follow transparent mechanisms according to national and regional legislation.

The work and responsibilities of the researcher will include the following research topics:

  • Participation in database analysis of surveys conducted companies and stakeholders (WP2).
  • Participation in the writing of project scientific papers and dissemination materials related to project impact and communication indicators (WP5).
  • Participation in project Coordination events and meetings (WP4).
  • Support in the launching of nautical products produced in WP3.
  • Design, launching and monitoring of training seminars (WP2).
  • Support in the production of final reports (WP2, WP3).
  • Other scientific dissemination tasks (WP5).
Specific Requirements

Candidates must comply with the following conditions:

1. Nationality:

  • Spanish nationality or that of one of the other member states of the European Union.
  • Whatever his/her nationality, spouses of Spaniards and nationals of other Member States of the European Union.
  • People included into International Agreements concluded by the European Union and ratified by Spain, related to free movement of workers.
  • Foreign candidates not included in the above paragraphs, legally resident in Spain.

4. Professional experience: at least 12 months working as a researcher in national or European research or innovation projects, related to Tourism, Environment and Economics.

Additional Information

This contract is related to specific work and services to be developed by the ULPGC in the context of TWINNEDBYSTARS project.

  • Type of contract: Indefinite-term contract for scientific-technical activities, based on article 23 bis of Law 14/2011, of 1 June, on Science, Technology and Innovation, and other regulatory regulations.
  • The purpose of this contract is to carry out activities related to the TWINNEDBYSTARS project, whose thematic area is linked to the research line called Tourism, Sustainable Development and Cooperation of the ULPGC, a project which the ULPGC is developing by virtue of the grant agreement nº 101124900, signed on 10/08/2023 with the European Commission and whose estimated completion date is 30/09/2026.
  • Incorporation planned for June 2025.
  • The staff to be recruited through this call for proposals with an indefinite contract is not considered permanent staff under any circumstances. The awarding of the employment contract does not imply any commitment on the part of this Foundation, the University or its dependent entities as to the subsequent incorporation of the interested party into the staff of these entities.
  • The contract may be terminated for any of the reasons provided for in Royal Legislative Decree 2/2015, of 23 October, approving the revised text of the Workers' Statute Law, or in the rest of the applicable legislation, paying special attention to letter e) of article 52 of the aforementioned RDL 2/2015: insufficiency of the financial allocation of the corresponding appropriation for the maintenance of the employment contract.
  • The dedication will be 20 hours per week, with exclusive dedication to the project being essential.
  • The gross monthly remuneration will amount to 1,148.72 €/month (including the proportional part of the special payments).
  • A trial period of six months will be established during which the employment relationship may be terminated at the request of either party. Situations of temporary incapacity, maternity, and adoption or fostering, which affect the worker during the trial period, will interrupt the calculation of the trial period.
Eligibility criteria

The following items and scores will be considered to evaluate the application:

Professional experience (Max. 3 points):

  • Professional experience working in national or European research or innovation projects, related to Tourism, Environment and Economics (0.25 points for each month worked, up to a maximum of 3 points).

It will be taken into account only the experience above the minimum of 6 months required.

Further training (max. 2 points):

  • Hold a MECES 3 degree (Master level) in any of these areas: Economics, Enviromental Sciences, Marine Sciences, Data Science, International Business, Geography, Tourism, Business Management, Communication, Information Sciences or related areas (2 points for each degree up to a maximum of 2 points).

Scientific experience (max. 5 point):

  • Publications indexed in Q1 scientific journals related to Social Sciences (0.25 points for each publication, up to a maximum of 3 points).
  • Participation in scientific congresses as speaker or member of the scientific committee (0.5 points for each congress up to a maximum of 2 points).
Selection process

Those applicants who achieve the three highest scores in the merit assessment phase will be called for an interview. The interview will be conducted in Spanish and/or totally or partially in English, according to the level required for the position. The selected applicants will be summoned, by e-mail, at least three days in advance. The evaluation of the interview will be carried out, up to a maximum of 10 points, based on the following criteria, being necessary a minimum score of 5 points in the interview to be awarded the position:

  • Initiative and ability to work in a team.
  • Capacity for presentation and presentation of results.
  • Motivation.
  • Adequacy of your profile and skills to the functions of the position.
  • Knowledge of the sector in which the activity will be developed.

In case it is necessary, a second interview may be carried out to clarify, complement or deepen in certain aspects necessary to adequately assess this phase.

Once this phase of the selection process is completed, the Commission will publish, on the corporate website of the FCPCT of the ULPGC, a final list with the scores of the applicants interviewed, for which the score or evaluation obtained in the merit assessment phase and in the interview, ordered from highest to lowest score, will be accumulated. This list will be submitted to the Managing Director Página 15 de 17 of the FCPCT, proposing the awarding of the position, according to the score obtained by the applicants.

The Commission may propose the creation of a reserve list in the event of resignation, failure to meet the requirements, or failure to pass the probationary period of the initially designated
