Learning Support and Intervention Teacher

At BFIS (Benjamin Franklin International School), we believe in inclusive education that promotes equitable access for all students, regardless of their unique challenges and needs. Our approach is based on the effective Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS) model, which ensures that each student receives the necessary support to thrive academically and socially. As a Learning Support and Intervention Teacher, you will play a crucial role in implementing our inclusive approach, working closely with students, teachers, and families to promote equity and access to educational excellence. You will be responsible for building students' self-esteem, setting high expectations, offering age-appropriate learning tasks, providing interventions and progress monitoring, and celebrating students' accomplishments. This role reports directly to the Coordinator of Whole School Support and requires collaboration with various stakeholders, including teachers, parents, and outside support services.

Roles and Responsibilities
  1. MTSS / RTI Implementation

Work with Educational Psychologists to identify the unique needs of students referred to the program and determine appropriate support interventions based on the MTSS framework.

  • Assist with facilitating / proctoring universal screeners, diagnostic assessments, and outcome assessments (Acadience, Measures of Academic Progress, CORE, IB assessments, SAT / ACT, etc.).
  • Develop data and teacher-informed Individualized Learning Plans for students, incorporating tiered interventions to address their specific needs.
  • Manage a caseload of students with intervention needs, or with either BML and / or Individualized Learning Support Plans.
  • Provide a program of support to students on either a one-to-one basis, in small groups, or in the general classroom, following MTSS principles and practices.
  • Monitor and document the progress of students receiving MTSS interventions, and regularly review and adjust interventions based on student response to instruction.
  • Collaborate with classroom teachers to plan and implement differentiated instruction and interventions that align with the MTSS framework and meet the individual needs of students.
  • Provide guidance / coaching to teachers on classroom set-up, instructional strategies, and behavior or academic plans to support students' success within the MTSS framework.
Teaching and Learning

Balance inclusion, enrichment, and remediation strategies based on student need, and ensure that instruction is aligned with best practices in learning support and research-based methodologies.

  • Explicitly teach students how to learn, using evidence-based strategies and techniques that promote effective learning skills and strategies.
  • Seek and apply best practices in learning support for each student based on their unique learning profile, and differentiate instruction to meet their individual needs.
  • Actively promote and support students' self-esteem as an essential part of their well-being and learning, and celebrate their accomplishments privately and publicly.
  • Support students’ social-emotional and behavioral development, monitoring / supervising lunch, patio / recess, and providing substitutions for teacher absences.
Communication and Collaboration

Communicate regularly with students' advisors, teachers, and families to provide updates on student progress and achievement, and collaborate with them to ensure coordinated support.

  • Liaise with outside support services, as needed, to provide comprehensive support to students within the MTSS framework.
  • Demonstrate a deep understanding of and support for the various curriculum plans including the assessment criteria and contextualization of learning objectives within the MTSS framework.
  • Follow established school protocols for managing confidential information, and maintain professional records for Individualized Learning Plans, student action plans, strategies, student support services, parent and teacher meetings, and other relevant documentation.
  • Provide clear and effective communication, both verbal and written, to ensure common understanding among keyholders regarding student needs.
  • Build and sustain positive relationships with colleagues, families, and other keyholders, and collaborate effectively across multidisciplinary teams to support student success.
  • Stay updated with current best practices and research and be willing to share knowledge and strategies with staff to promote inclusive education.
  • Assist with other tasks and projects as assigned by the line manager.
Skills and Requirements
  • An education degree from an accredited institution of higher learning in Learning Support / Special Education or a degree in a relevant subject / assignment area with a postgraduate qualification from an accredited institution of higher learning.
  • Proven experience of working effectively in a similar role, with a strong understanding of MTSS principles and practices.
  • The experience and drive to join a team working towards a research-based educational environment.
  • A collaborative practitioner who values teamwork and can effectively ensure that the MTSS model is integrated into the school's overall educational approach.
  • Remains current in professional practices and developments, information technologies, and educational research applicable to the role.
