Title : Lead VFX Artist (Remote - Unity & Unreal)

Location : Spain, Chile, Argentina & Mexico

1518 Studios is expanding our Global Art Team

The Lead VFX Artist will lead and motivate a team of talented VFX Artists to deliver high-quality, AAA assets. This role involves significant responsibility and offers an opportunity to develop a strong team, requiring artistic, technical, and managerial expertise. The Lead VFX Artist will plan, organize, monitor, and evaluate team work to meet production goals in terms of time and quality, while anticipating and solving team and production challenges to deliver stunning visual experiences.

The ideal candidate is an experienced VFX Artist in the gaming industry, with a balanced skill set in technical problem-solving, artistic ability, and a passion for all types of VFX, from gameplay and combat to environmental effects and destruction.

Your responsibilities include supervising the design and implementation of high-quality AAA VFX that support gameplay and art direction, creating and optimizing VFX within performance constraints, collaborating with art, animation, design, and programming teams to address challenges, and translating references and concepts into prototypes.

We seek a senior professional with game industry experience and a portfolio demonstrating real-time FX work, including at least one shipped AAA game.

What you’ll be doing

  • Create high-quality particle effects and textures.
  • Collaborate across departments to develop VFX from concept to final implementation.
  • Utilize engine tools, Maya, Houdini, Substance, and other software to produce VFX assets.
  • Implement VFX content, including placement and scripting for gameplay behaviors.
  • Work with teams to resolve artistic challenges.
  • Create effects aligned with the art direction.
  • Optimize effects for performance and manage their memory and computational costs.
  • Establish and maintain best practices documentation.
  • Storyboard VFX concepts.

Requirements

What we’re looking for

  • Knowledge of Unity and Unreal Particle Systems.
  • Experience with Unreal's CASCADE system.
  • Portfolio with Flipbooks VFX and stylized effects.
  • Proficiency with industry-standard content creation tools (Maya, 3ds Max, Photoshop, Substance).
  • Deep understanding of real-time VFX techniques and pipelines.
  • Experience with supplementary 3D and VFX software.
  • Portfolio demonstrating technical and artistic VFX execution.
  • Experience optimizing VFX for consoles and mobile platforms.
  • Shader creation skills in Unity and Unreal.
  • Understanding of game production pipelines.
  • Strong sense of timing, animation, and motion.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and mentoring skills.

Good to Have

  • Scripting or plugin development experience in MEL, C/C++ for Maya.
  • Skills in modeling, skinning, animation, or lighting.
  • Bilingual in Spanish.
