A leading biotechnology company in Barcelona is seeking a Laboratory Technician to support the R&D Vector Core Unit. The successful candidate will play a crucial role in producing, purifying, and characterizing AAV vectors, utilizing molecular biology techniques and ensuring compliance with quality standards. Ideal candidates will have a relevant degree, laboratory experience, and skills in cloning, cell culture, and quality control.

Company Description

SpliceBio is a genetic medicines company (biotech) harnessing its proprietary Protein Splicing platform to develop the next generation of gene therapies. Our mission is to develop novel genetic medicines to treat patients suffering from uncurable diseases by delivering any genes using Protein Splicing. Our platform is based on technology developed in the Muir Lab at Princeton University after more than 20 years of pioneering intein and protein engineering research. SCOPE

The Laboratory Technician will play a key role within the Translational Department, specifically in the R&D Vector Core Unit, supporting the production, purification, and characterization of AAV (Adeno-Associated Virus) vectors. The role involves performing molecular biology techniques, supporting plasmid preparation, and executing production and purification processes for AAV vectors in compliance with internal procedures and international quality standards. The technician will work closely with the research team to ensure the successful execution of experiments and contribute to the development of innovative gene therapy products.

Key Responsibilities

Molecular Biology and Plasmid Preparation

  • Perform molecular cloning activities to generate new DNA constructs using different techniques
  • Support the generation of plasmid preparations
  • Execute quality control assessments of DNA constructs
  • Support the preparation and quality control of plasmids


Cell culture, AAV Vector Production and Purification

  • Assist in cell culture maintenance and techniques
  • Execute AAV vector production processes
  • Perform purification of AAV vectors using different methodologies
  • Support the characterization and quality assessment of AAV vectors
  • Aid in the execution and development of cell-based assays


Laboratory Operations and Compliance

  • Keep accurate and detailed laboratory notebooks and records
  • Maintain accurate inventories of generated constructs and vectors
  • Ensure all activities are conducted in compliance with internal procedures and safety guidelines
  • Maintain laboratory equipment, perform routine calibrations, and report technical issues
  • Assist in the development and optimization of protocols and standard operating procedures (SOPs)
  • Contribute to maintaining a clean, organized, and safe laboratory environment


Collaboration and Continuous Improvement

  • Collaborate with Scientists and other team members to troubleshoot experimental challenges and suggest improvements
  • Participate in team meetings to discuss project progress and propose technical solutions
  • Stay updated on technological advances relevant to AAV production and molecular biology techniques


Required Qualifications

Education: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Biology, Biotechnology, Biomedical Sciences, or a related field

Experience: Minimum of 1-2 years of hands-on laboratory experience, preferably in an academic or industry setting, with exposure to molecular biology techniques and/or viral vector production

Skills and competencies:

  • Practical experience with molecular biology techniques such as cloning (PCR, restriction digestion, etc.) and plasmid purification
  • Competency in mammalian cell culture and aseptic techniques
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to accurately document experimental procedures and results
  • Good organizational skills
  • Ability to work both independently and within a team-oriented environment


Preferred Qualifications

Experience with qPCR and dPCR

Knowledge of and experience with AAV vectors: familiarity with construct design and/or production and purification methodologies

Experience with assay development

Understanding of Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) and/or Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP)

Previous experience in the biotechnology or gene therapy industry

Certifications in Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) or other relevant certifications
