Created in 2005 by the Generalitat de Catalunya (Government of Catalonia) and the University of Barcelona, IRB Barcelona is a Severo Ochoa Centre of Excellence—a seal that was awarded in 2011.

The institute is devoted to conducting research of excellence in biomedicine and to transferring results to clinical practice, thus improving people’s quality of life, while simultaneously promoting the training of outstanding researchers, technology transfer, and public communication of science. Its 29 laboratories and seven core facilities address basic questions in biology and are orientated to diseases such as cancer, metastasis, Alzheimer’s, diabetes, and rare conditions.

IRB Barcelona is an international centre that hosts 500 members and 45 nationalities. It is located in the Barcelona Science Park. IRB Barcelona forms part of the Barcelona Institute of Science and Technology (BIST) and the “Xarxa de Centres de Recerca de Catalunya” (CERCA).

Your Role & Our Team

IRB Barcelona seeks to recruit aproactive and service-oriented IT Support Specialist to join the Information Technology and Services Department, providing first and second-level technical support to our scientific and administrative communities.

This position is not linked to a specific project and will focus on ensuring day-to-day IT service excellence, maintaining computers across multiple platforms (Windows, macOS, Linux), supporting scientific software environments, and contributing to the robustness and usability of our digital workplace and research infrastructure.

The successful candidate will join a dynamic and multidisciplinary team, playing a key role in delivering IT services in a biomedical research environment of excellence.

Key Responsabilities:

User Support & Helpdesk

  • Act as a first and second-level support contact for users through ticketing system, email, or in-person interactions.
  • Diagnose and resolve technical issues in Windows, macOS, and Linux environments.
  • Support a diverse user base, including scientific personnel with specialized computing needs and administrative staff.
  • Document incidents and resolutions, and propose improvements to enhance user experience.
  • Support the deployment and maintenance of scientific software and collaboration tools.

System Support & Maintenance

  • Install, configure, and troubleshoot desktop computers, laptops, and other IT equipment.
  • Maintain and monitor user devices, printing systems, and network connectivity.
  • Assist with user account management and resource access provisioning (Active Directory, LDAP).
  • Contribute to system automation and maintenance tasks using scripting (e.g., Bash, Python).
  • Provide basic support and guidance on data storage, backup, and secure transfer practices.

EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS:

You have:

  • Intermediate or Higher Vocational Training (Formación Profesional de Grado Medio o Superior) in IT, systems administration, or similar field.
  • Previous experience as an IT Support Specialist, Helpdesk Technician, or similar role.
  • Solid knowledge of:
    • Windows 10/11, Microsoft Office, and standard desktop tools.
    • Linux administration for end-user computers.
    • MacOS support.
    • Network fundamentals (TCP/IP), basic troubleshooting, and printing systems.
  • Basic knowledge of security principles and best practices.
  • Good scripting skills (e.g., Bash or Python) for automation tasks.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency in English, Catalan, and Spanish.
  • A collaborative, problem-solving, and customer-focused attitude.

You Might Also Have:

  • Experience in scientific or academic environments.
  • Familiarity with scientific software or research computing tools.
  • Knowledge of federated identity systems (LDAP, EduGAIN, etc.).
  • Experience with configuration management or deployment automation tools.
