Offer Description

The Fully-Funded PhD Programme at ICIQ supports exceptional graduate students worldwide in pursuing a PhD in chemistry, leading to a Doctoral Thesis in partnership with Universitat Rovira i Virgili (URV). The programme aims to enhance professional careers in academia and industry through:

  • Performing individual research projects under renowned group leaders
  • Opportunities for short-term research stays internationally
  • Complementary training in technical and soft skills, including seminars, instrumentation, IP management, entrepreneurship, research integrity, knowledge transfer, grant writing, project management, communication, and career development. ICIQ offers a personalized training programme, SHARP, during the PhD.

Applicants should have excellent academic records, a strong commitment to research, and good English proficiency. Admission is competitive.

Application Process

Applications are submitted online via ICIQ’s Career Portal. Applicants must upload:

  • Curriculum Vitae (PDF)
  • Personal statement (max 2 pages, PDF)
  • Official transcripts of BSc and MSc studies (PDF, with certified translation if necessary)
  • Letters of recommendation from two referees
  • English proficiency evidence (optional but recommended)

Applicants should select only one supervisor and ensure all documents are complete before submission.

Eligibility and Evaluation

Open to candidates with a Master’s degree in Chemistry, Pharmacy, Physics, Chemical Engineering, or related fields, completed by enrolment. Evaluation criteria include personal statement, academic marks, and interviews for shortlisted candidates.

Selection Process

Applications are reviewed for eligibility, then evaluated based on criteria. Shortlisted candidates will be interviewed. Final decisions are notified by mid-July 2025, with publication on the ICIQ website. Successful candidates must accept or decline within five days.

Additional Details

The fellowship includes a pre-doctoral contract under Spanish Law 14/2011, with annual renewal up to 4 years, salary scaling from €18,180 to €24,348, social security, and full social benefits. The position is full-time at ICIQ, with no other income or fellowships allowed. The PhD must be completed within 4 years.

Research projects include topics like large language models in catalysis, electrochemical conversion, hybrid oligomers, nitrogen hydrogenation, CO2 reduction, bio-inspired solar cells, energy materials, chain-walking catalysis, biosensing, and microswimmers.
