Job Description: Human Factors Engineering is responsible for the holistic development of Human Machine Interfaces (HMI) for all relevant operators' workstations within Military Air platforms, such as cockpits, flight decks, mission consoles, and ground control stations. The design aims at creating optimal interfaces between people and their activities using advanced technologies, user interface principles, and validation methodologies including prototyping. Contributions also include safety demonstration and certification of system aspects, applying engineering and user interface design knowledge throughout the product lifecycle. Key competencies include System Engineering, Human-Machine Interaction, User Interface/Interaction, User Experience, and Software Ergonomics.

The main focus is applying Human Factors Engineering (HFE) to ensure user-centered workstation/HMI design based on criteria such as:

  • Classical ergonomics: visibility, reachability, usability, ingress, and egress.
  • Cognitive ergonomics: workload, usability, situational awareness, human error.
  • Environmental factors: lighting, NVIS compatibility, noise.

Main tasks and responsibilities include:

  • Designing workstations (cockpits, flight decks, mission consoles, ground stations), including geometry, layout, and furnishings.
  • HMI design and multimodal interaction: control units, indicators, displays, and interaction means.
  • Applying end-to-end HFE processes throughout the system lifecycle, from concept analysis to entry into service.
  • Conducting mission, task, ergonomic, workload, and human error analyses.
  • Developing HMI prototypes (hardware and software) using virtual models, simulations, and physical mock-ups.
  • Performing Human Factors Verification & Validation: design reviews, demonstrations, validation, and testing.
  • Ensuring Human Factors qualification and certification.
