Job description

Offer Description

About the Project BESCAPE — Advanced Wide Bandgap-based Power Processing and Management for Future Space Exploration. This Horizon Europe MSCA Doctoral Network Joint Doctorate (DN-JD) initiative, developed with the European Space Agency (ESA) and leading European space companies, addresses challenges in power conversion, advanced control, and power distribution for future human space exploration missions. The project brings together a highly international consortium comprising 11 Doctoral Candidates across European universities and research institutions, including Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM, Spain), UT (The Netherlands), UNIOVI (Spain), KU Leuven (Belgium), UMONS (Belgium), UGent (Belgium), UNIPD (Italy), and UMH (Spain). The collaboration includes space-sector stakeholders such as ESA, Leonardo, IMEC, Thales Alenia Space Belgium, OHB System AG, and CRISA-AIRBUS.

UPM offers 1 fully funded PhD position: “Wireless battery charging Unit for future space missions: drones and rovers.”

Host Institution: Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM). Supervisors from UPM. Joint Degree Partner: Université de Mons (UMONS, Belgium). Industrial Mentors: ESA (The Netherlands).

Objective: Advance wireless power transfer technologies for future space missions. The selected candidate will design wireless charging solutions, including universal transmitting coils and advanced control techniques for reliable charging of autonomous vehicles such as drones and rovers.

Secondments: ESA (3 months) for training on needs and challenges of Wireless Power technology in space missions; UMONS (6 months) for advanced training in wireless power transfer converter topologies, control techniques, and PhD courses for the Joint Degree.
