Dr. Mario Francisco Fernández is seeking exceptional researchers who hold a PhD (with no more than 8 years of full-time equivalent research experience) and are interested in pursuing a research project within his team, in the framework of the Marie Curie Postdoctoral Fellowships 2025.
Hosting Group:
The MODES (Modelling, Optimization and Statistical Inference) group at Universidade da Coruña, led by Prof. Francisco-Fernández, will host the fellow within the CITIC research center. MODES has a long-standing track record in nonparametric statistics, regression models, and functional data analysis, and offers a dynamic and supportive environment for research and innovation.
The group currently coordinates several competitive research projects, including a national grant from the Spanish Ministry of Science (PID2023-147127OB-I00) and a Galician Research Group grant from the Xunta de Galicia (GRC ED431C-2024/14), both led by Prof. Francisco-Fernández as Principal Investigator.
MODES has also established strong collaborations with leading industrial partners such as INDITEX, Ferroatlántica, Navantia, Estrella Galicia, FACET Ibérica, and Galfor, demonstrating its ability to connect methodological research with real-world challenges.
Proposed Research Line:
Bagging-based smoothing parameter selection in nonparametric functional regression models
We invite applications from highly motivated postdoctoral researchers interested in advancing the field of nonparametric functional data analysis (NPFDA) through the use of bagging-based techniques. The proposed project focuses on the development, theoretical study, and computational implementation of new bagging-based methods for smoothing parameter selection in functional regression models.
While inspired by earlier contributions to bagging in the univariate setting, this research will explore novel methodologies suited to functional predictors. Core objectives include:
Additional research directions may address the integration of bagging in other NPFDA components, such as model aggregation, robust estimation, or variable selection in high-dimensional contexts.
Candidate Profile:
We welcome candidates with strong quantitative backgrounds, ideally in statistics, applied mathematics, or data science. Prior experience in functional data analysis, R programming, simulation-based inference, and computational statistics will be considered advantageous.
Infrastructure and Support:
The fellow will have access to the CITIC facilities, including office space, computing resources, specialized software, and interdisciplinary collaboration opportunities. Support will also be provided for dissemination, software development, and international networking. The fellow will receive as well tailored support in preparing a competitive MSCA Postdoctoral Fellowship application from the university’s Talent Recruitment Office.
