About GICOM – What Are We?

GICOM (Composting Research Group) is an internationally recognized research group founded in 2000, with a mission to transform organic waste into value through biotechnological innovation. While originally focused on composting, GICOM has evolved into a multidisciplinary platform driving sustainable resource recovery and bioproduct development through Solid-State Fermentation, Anaerobic Digestion, and Nanotechnology-enabled environmental engineering.

Our current focus is on :
  • Biotechnological valorisation of organic waste into high-value compounds
  • Pilot-scale development of SSF and anaerobic digestion systems
  • Integrated process monitoring, with emphasis on gas emissions and product quality
  • Bridging fundamental research (TRL 1–2) and applied demonstrations (TRL 5–6)
  • Co-creation with industries and public authorities to deploy circular solutions

GICOM operates within a strong collaborative ecosystem and benefits from state-of-the-art laboratories, bioreactors, and analytical facilities.
