Mainloop AI in Barcelona is seeking a Forward Deployed Engineer to join our AI-native delivery team, embedding with clients to map processes, build MVPs, and prove value quickly.

You will work at the intersection of engineering, consulting and product, using AI coding agents to move from idea to working prototype with rapid feedback and disciplined handover.

Fluent English is required; Spanish is useful. Based in Barcelona with frequent travel across Europe.

Forward Deployed Engineer We’re building Mainloop AI in Barcelona: a new AI-native team that goes into businesses, understands how work really happens, and builds working automation in weeks — not months. Mainloop AI is being created to automate professional-services work across roughly 15 countries. The team will focus on the processes where time disappears: manual admin, approvals, reconciliations, handovers, recurring spreadsheets, and workflows that have never been properly automated. This role is for the first half of that mission: going into the business, understanding the real process, building a fast MVP with AI agents, proving whether it is worth scaling — and then handing it over properly to the product and engineering team that will take it further. We’re now hiring Forward Deployed Engineers to join Mainloop AI in Barcelona.

What you’ll do

You’ll work at the intersection of engineering, consulting and product. A project may start as a sentence — “our people spend two days a month reconciling this by hand” — and from there, you make it real.

Your responsibilities will include:

• Going into the business, often in person, to understand how a process actually works.
• Sitting with the people doing the work, not just relying on the process as described by management.
• Mapping workflows, pain points, actors, rules, data flows and business impact.
• Checking what already exists in our portfolio before building anything new.
• Writing the functional architecture that agents and engineers can build from.
• Using AI coding agents to move from idea to working prototype quickly.
• Building MVPs that can be tested with real users.
• Running feedback loops with stakeholders and improving the product through each iteration.
• Quantifying the benefit and being able to say when something is not worth automating.
• Onboarding early users and making sure the MVP is actually adopted.
• Creating a clear handover pack for the Product Owner and engineering team.

You take projects from zero to MVP. You do not carry them forever. Once a product is proven, the Tech Lab takes over hardening, scaling, security and long-term ownership. That means you get a new business problem, a new process and a blank page every few weeks — without accumulating a permanent support tail.

What makes this role different

• This is not a traditional developer role, and it is not a traditional consulting role. We are looking for someone with a consultant’s instinct who can build: someone who cares as much about why the invoice takes eleven days as they do about the technology used to fix it.
• You will work with AI coding agents as a core part of the build process. The value of the role is not typing every line of code manually. It is understanding the business problem, deciding what should and should not be built, specifying it clearly, steering the agents well, and judging whether what comes back is actually right.
• Here, AI gives you leverage — but the judgement, architecture, stakeholder trust and accountability stay human.

• You are genuinely interested in how businesses work, especially the messy reality behind processes.
• You can build working web applications across frontend and backend.
• You are comfortable going from an idea to something usable on your own.
• You use coding agents seriously and can review their output critically.
• You are strong at understanding needs, asking good questions and finding the truth behind a workflow.
• You write clearly — functional architecture, project write-ups and handover documents matter here.
• You know when to reuse what already exists instead of starting from scratch.
• You can quantify impact and are comfortable saying “no” when a project is not worth building.
• You can let go of a project once it has been handed over.
• You speak fluent English. Spanish is useful day to day.
• You are based in Barcelona, or open to relocating there.
• You are comfortable with regular travel across Europe and beyond.

Worth knowing upfront

Barcelona is your base, but this role involves significant travel. You will visit teams across roughly 15 countries to understand processes in person. Travel and accommodation are covered. Nobody is on call. Ever. You are not selling consulting days — success is measured by whether the thing works, gets used and is handed over properly.
