Field Applications Scientist - Spain (Barcelona)

As a Field Applications Scientist at Illumina, you will be responsible for enabling customer success within your territory, partnering with customers to provide technical training, troubleshooting, and complaint resolution. This position serves as a scientific expert consultant during pre- and post-sales activities and will collaborate with the broader commercial team to maximize sales growth and customer satisfaction.

The position is based in Barcelona, Spain, covering mainly Cataluña, with a valid driving license within Spain being essential. You will have the flexibility to travel up to 50%. Fluent English and Spanish language skills are essential.

Why You

As the primary technical field contact for your customers, you will build strong relationships by managing new installations and providing extensive customer training. You will deliver logistical and troubleshooting support and provide data analysis to ensure maximum utilization of Illumina systems. Your customers are at the forefront of genetics and NGS, helping deliver advancements in various fields. Your colleagues are passionate about their work, knowing it can improve lives.

Responsibilities will include

  1. Coordinate new installations, including reviewing facility requirements, inspections, and instrument validation.
  2. Assist with customer lab and experimental design, workflow best practices, and data storage and analysis to implement Illumina solutions.
  3. Conduct on-site customer training on Illumina microarray, NGS, library preparation, bioinformatics, consumables, or related products.
  4. Address technical challenges related to biochemistry, assay or experimental design, software, instruments, or user skills; escalate issues as needed.
  5. Stay informed of and communicate technical product updates, new applications, and market innovations.
  6. Provide customer feedback to help improve products.
  7. Partner with other teams to develop strategies for acquiring and expanding business through consulting, presentations, workshops, demonstrations, and seminars.
  8. Establish and maintain customer relationships, understand their goals, and stay attuned to their needs.
  9. Participate in departmental and cross-functional project teams to execute project plans.
  10. Prioritize tasks to meet departmental KPIs.
  11. Represent the company professionally and ethically at all times.

Preferred background, skills, and experience

  • PhD or MSc in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, or Genetics.
  • Experience with genotyping and sequencing technologies is highly desirable.
  • Previous biotech experience or knowledge of Illumina applications is preferred.
  • Willingness to travel up to 50%.
  • Prior experience supporting customers in a technical field is advantageous.
  • Ability to analyze complex problems independently.
  • Use judgment in developing methods and evaluation criteria.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English and Spanish.
  • Understanding of genotyping data analysis software and bioinformatics tools is advantageous.
  • Experience with instrumentation like liquid handling robotics and optical scanners is preferred.
  • Strong problem-solving, interpersonal, and account management skills in a commercial environment.
