The world is in the midst of a climate emergency. Emissions need to be cut 55% by 2030, and net zero achieved by 2050 to meet the objectives of the European Green Deal. To make this happen we need to embrace a new paradigm that includes radically changing how we move and live in cities.

Many innovative solutions to achieve sustainable urban mobility already exist, yet their widespread adoption is often slow. Our role as Europe’s leading network for transport innovation in cities is to catalyse uptake and accelerate this transition.

Job Purpose:

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) will lead EIT Urban Mobility through its next phase of sustainable and profitable growth, positioning the organization as a leading force in the field of the urban mobility ecosystem.

The CEO will drive strategic initiatives to enhance urban mobility impact across Europe, fostering synergies between cities and industry to identify common solutions and actions that address the challenges citizens face in their cities, creating significant value and driving mutual growth.

The CEO is responsible for the overall management, strategic direction, operational efficiency, and financial sustainability of the organization.

The CEO will work closely with the Supervisory Board, the Management Team, Innovation Ecosystem members and partners, key stakeholders (e.g.: EIT, European Parliament, European Commission, Council of the EU, Member States, EIT UM Association, Shareholder, etc.) to ensure impactful project delivery, continuous innovation, and alignment with the mission of EIT Urban Mobility and the implementation of its Strategic Agenda.

Key responsibilities:

1. Strategic Leadership: Lead the development and implementation of EIT Urban Mobility’s long-term vision, mission, and strategic goals. Ensure alignment with EIT’s objectives and the broader goals of urban mobility innovation. Lead the organization in identifying and pursuing new opportunities for growth, impact, and sales. Ensure the visibility of the entity with the Communications team (on-line and site events).
2. Sustainability & Growth: Ensure the implementation of the KIC strategic agenda. Identify and implement sustainable growth opportunities for the organization, focusing on long-term impact, scaling initiatives, and increasing EIT Urban Mobility's role as a key player in the European mobility ecosystem. Develop a business model compatible with the mission of EIT Urban Mobility and its activities as a granting authority. Open new markets.
3. Operational Management: Oversee the day-to-day operations of the organization, ensuring efficiency and effectiveness. Manage the executive team, providing guidance and support to achieve organizational goals. Ensure compliance with all regulatory and legal requirements. Ensure lead and control over the 5 Innovation Hubs (Barcelona, Amsterdam, Munich, Copenhagen, and Prague).
4. Stakeholder Engagement: Build and maintain strong relationships with the executive leadership team, key stakeholders, EIT, EIT Urban Mobility association and cities (City club and other networks), industry and academia, and EU/national government bodies (e.g.: European Parliament, European Commission, Council of the EU, Member States, etc.). Represent EIT Urban Mobility at high-level meetings, conferences, and events. Foster a culture of collaboration and innovation within the organization and with external partners. Develop and manage the organization's budget, ensuring financial sustainability. Oversee fundraising efforts, including securing grants and partnerships. Ensure transparent and accountable financial practices.
5. Innovation and Impact: Drive innovation in urban mobility solutions, ensuring the organization remains at the forefront of industry trends. Measure and report on the impact of the organization’s initiatives, ensuring continuous improvement.
6. Governance and Compliance: Ensure that the organization adheres to the highest standards of good governance and ethical conduct. Implement and monitor policies and procedures to ensure compliance with all relevant laws and regulations. Report regularly to the Supervisory Board on the organization’s performance and strategic initiatives. Get involved with any potential internal investigations carried out by the Compliance Officer, stemming from the whistleblowing channel.
7. Human Resources Management: Lead and inspire a high-performing team, fostering a positive and inclusive work environment. Oversee talent acquisition, development, and retention strategies to build a strong and capable workforce. Implement effective performance management systems to ensure accountability and continuous improvement. Promote a culture of inclusivity and diversity within the organization. Identify and mitigate potential risks to the organization, ensuring the sustainability and resilience of its operations. Develop and implement risk management strategies and contingency plans.

Qualifications:

• Experience working with innovation management, business, venture capital funds and/or others, essentially, investors.
• Proven track record in senior leadership roles, ideally within innovation-driven organizations, public-private partnerships, or international entities.
• Experience with the societal challenge in the field of urban mobility sector, with a deep understanding of the challenges and opportunities in creating sustainable and smart cities.
• Knowledge of the EU policy context and/or experience in or influencing the EU public sector and/or urban mobility ecosystem (institution, NGO, governments, agencies, EIT,…) is a strong advantage.
• Demonstrated ability to build and maintain strategic relationships with high-level stakeholders across public, private, and academic sectors.
• Experience in commerce and sales.
• Experience in financial management and fundraising.
• Knowledge of the European innovation ecosystem and regulatory environment.
• Strong strategic thinking and problem-solving skills.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• Fluency in English is required; proficiency in Spanish and other European languages is a plus.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Advanced (master/PhD or equivalent) degree in business administration, urban planning, engineering, or other relevant equivalent qualification.
