As Principal Engineer in the Engineering CoE, you play a critical role in driving and enforcing a robust platform engineering structure and culture. This role focuses on pushing standards and complexity into platforms rather than shifting them left to developers, thereby increasing productivity and reducing compliance costs. We advocate for policy as code and compliance by design.

As a leader, you will champion the implementation of shared responsibility models, ensuring clear delineation of duties between development, platform, and security teams, with a focus on maximizing productivity and rapid issue resolution.

A strong emphasis on compliance and policy as code will be essential, ensuring adherence to regulatory requirements like GDPR and HIPAA, and industry best practices. Securing platforms and applications is fundamental, requiring a deep understanding of security best practices and network architectures.

The Engineering CoE aims to drive cost efficiency throughout cloud infrastructure, moving beyond lift-and-shift strategies to truly cloud-native solutions. Given the elastic nature of the cloud, we should leverage that. The CoE also focuses on strengthening Swiss Re practices in automating testing, deployment, and configuration management, enabling engineers to focus on strategic tasks like design and monitoring. Your expertise and skills are critical to this success.

The Engineering CoE defines development standards for Swiss Re and advises platform engineers to prioritize reliability, cost efficiency, and disaster recovery best practices in their designs, ensuring scalability and optimal platform usage.

Key Responsibilities :

• Shared Responsibility Models : Define and implement clear shared responsibility models, ensuring accountability across teams for infrastructure, platforms, security, and reliability.
• Compliance and Policy as Code : Develop roadmaps to embed SDLC into code with platform teams, maintaining compliance and policy as code solutions.
• Standards and Metrics : Embed standards into platforms, enabling critical engineering metrics to support Swiss Re's data-driven ambitions. Collaborate with platform teams to ensure proper metrics are in place for data-driven decision-making.
• Security : Work with security, platform, and DevX teams to enhance security through standardization, while maintaining excellent developer experience focused on productivity.
• Cost Efficiency : Drive cost optimization across hybrid cloud infrastructure, focusing on resource efficiency and innovative solutions.
• Strategy : Advise on development and implementation of comprehensive platform engineering strategies aligned with business objectives and technology trends.
• Championing Platform Engineering : Promote a strong platform engineering mindset and culture across all teams.
• Platform Services : Inspire development of self-service platforms and products that empower developers with efficient tools and resources.

About you

• Bachelor's degree in computer science or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
• 15 years of experience in software engineering leadership roles, building developer-facing products or platforms.
• At least 10 years' experience with large-scale platform engineering, with hands-on experience in cloud, hybrid, and on-premise environments.
• Experience in technical leadership, leading global projects, and setting technical direction for teams.

Preferred qualifications :

• Experience driving engineering excellence through testing, monitoring, and continuous improvement.
• Strong understanding of Agile methodologies and the software development lifecycle.
• Ability to translate developer needs into exceptional software tools and experiences.
• Proven leadership skills with the ability to set vision and inspire teams.

For Spain, the salary range is between EUR 98,000 and EUR 163,000 for a full-time role, considering role requirements, scope, and candidate profile. Swiss Re also offers performance-based variable compensation and various benefits, subject to policies and employment terms.
