Being an external contractor means you are engaged as an independent professional rather than as an employee. You provide specific services to a company under a defined agreement, with clear deliverables and timelines, but you are responsible for managing your own business affairs. This includes handling your own taxes, social security contributions, and professional insurance in accordance with the regulations of your country of residence.
As a contractor, you do not receive employee benefits such as paid vacation, sick leave, pension contributions, or health insurance. Instead, you work with greater autonomy and flexibility, managing your own schedule. You invoice for your time on a monthly basis—at the agreed hourly rate. You are also free to take on other clients, as long as there is no conflict of interest with the company you're contracted with.
In short, being an external contractor offers independence and flexibility, while also requiring a higher level of personal responsibility for administrative and legal obligations.
