Join us as a Mid-Level lawyer at Barclays where you will be responsible for legal coverage, regulatory compliance, and development of Iberian Investment and Corporate Banking businesses, with a focus on debt capital markets in Spain and Portugal. The role will also include providing legal support to the management of the Spanish and Portuguese branches.

You will sit in the Iberian legal team and support the Banking, Markets, and Corporate Banking teams on a broad range of complex international transactions. Regular exposure to clients, external law firms, as well as business and infrastructure colleagues both in London and in-country will be part of your responsibilities.

Key skills required for this role include :
  • Spanish law qualified lawyer with experience in-house at a top-tier Spanish or international law firm or in a financial institution.
  • Experience with relevant financial services products, especially debt capital markets transactions.
  • Good communication skills, ability to work as part of a team, and collaborate across business and infrastructure functions with multiple stakeholders.
  • Native Spanish speaker and proficient in English.

Purpose of the role

To ensure that operations in the country or region comply with applicable laws and regulations and to help the bank manage legal and reputational risks associated with these activities.

Accountabilities
  • Develop and implement best practice legal strategies for risk management and compliance.
  • Provide legal advice and support to the bank's country coverage teams on a wide range of legal issues, including regulatory compliance, risk management, project management, and transactional matters.
  • Represent the bank in legal proceedings related to its operations in the country or region, such as litigation, arbitration, and regulatory investigations.
  • Create and review legal documents such as loan agreements, security documents, and other financing documents to ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
  • Conduct legal research and analysis to stay up-to-date on changes in laws and regulations that may impact the bank's operations.
  • Develop and deliver training programs to educate employees on legal and regulatory requirements.
  • Proactively identify, communicate, and provide legal advice on applicable laws, rules, and regulations (LRRs). Keep updated on changes to LRRs and ensure they are reflected within policies, standards, and controls.
  • Advise key stakeholders, including leadership teams and senior management, on the impact and alignment of legal considerations.
  • Manage and mitigate risks through assessment, supporting the control and governance agenda.
  • Demonstrate leadership and accountability in managing risks and strengthening controls.
  • Understand organizational functions to contribute to business goals.
  • Collaborate across different areas to stay aligned with business strategies.
  • Create solutions based on sophisticated analytical thinking, comparing and selecting complex alternatives.
  • Incorporate extensive research outcomes into problem-solving processes.
  • Build and maintain trusting relationships with internal and external stakeholders, using influencing and negotiating skills to achieve outcomes.
