Facility Manager / Health & Safety Officer

We are seeking an experienced Facility Manager / Health & Safety Officer to oversee operations, maintenance, and safety at EMBL Barcelona's research facilities. This role involves managing laboratory infrastructure, equipment, safety protocols, and support services to meet researchers' and staff's needs. The successful candidate will collaborate with scientists, administrative staff, and external providers to ensure regulatory compliance and operational efficiency.

The position is based at the Barcelona Biomedical Research Park (PRBB), supporting EMBL's research in tissue biology and disease modelling. The role requires close coordination with central EMBL teams to maintain harmonized standards across all EMBL sites in Europe.

The ideal candidate is passionate about health and safety, project management, and laboratory operations, and will support the smooth functioning of the Barcelona site. They will report to the Head of Unit and the Head of Administration, working closely with the Head of Health and Safety at EMBL headquarters in Heidelberg.

Your role

Facility Management duties :

• Oversee daily operations and maintenance of laboratories, research facilities, offices, and common areas.
• Coordinate with PRBB building facility managers and partner institutes.
• Manage infrastructure including HVAC, power, water, and research equipment.
• Develop and supervise preventive maintenance schedules.
• Coordinate with external vendors for maintenance and upgrades.
• Supervise facility staff.
• Manage budgets, procurement, and inventory.
• Oversee space planning and allocation.
• Maintain documentation on operations, safety, and compliance.
• Prioritize sustainability in projects.
• Work with research teams to support scientific activities.
• Respond to emergencies and implement contingency plans.
• Oversee refurbishment projects from design to validation.

Health and Safety duties :

• Implement EMBL's Health and Safety strategy at EMBL Barcelona.
• Handle fire safety, occupational, biological, chemical, and laser safety, liaising with authorities.
• Assess biological projects and protocols.
• Conduct safety training for staff.
• Perform inspections to ensure regulatory compliance.
• Manage hazardous waste and liaise with disposal services.
• Draft and update safety documents and policies.
• Maintain safety databases.
• Monitor working conditions and advise staff on safety matters.
• Encourage incident reporting and conduct investigations.
• Liaise with occupational health services.
• Organize first aid training and oversee supplies.
• Act as a first aider when needed.
• Serve as a contact for mental health support.
• Chair safety committee meetings.
• Represent EMBL Barcelona in safety committees.

Perform other tasks as assigned by the Head of Unit or Administration.

You have

• University degree in Biology or Biochemistry.
• Minimum 5 years' experience in a similar research laboratory role.
• Knowledge of laboratory safety regulations.
• Fluent in Spanish and Catalan; very good in English.
• Experience with tissue biology research technologies.
• Familiarity with intergovernmental organization rules.
• Strong communication skills across diverse backgrounds.
• Positive, solution-oriented mindset.
• Good planning and prioritization skills.
• Excellent organizational abilities and time management.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

You might also have

• Qualification in laser safety.
• Training as a biosafety officer.
• First aid and mental health first aid training.

Contract length : 3 years, renewable up to 9.

Salary : Grade 7.
