Offer Description

The Institute of Marine Sciences (ICM-CSIC) and the Institute of Corpuscular Physics (IFIC-CSIC-UV) are offering atwo year fully-funded Postdoc positionin Artificial Intelligence.

We are looking for a researcher to develop AI-based methods to utilize seismic data acquired from fiber optic cables for multiple applications, such as earthquake detection, tsunami warning, identification of ships, marine mammals, and other acoustic signals. While expertise in seismology is appreciated, it is not required. We seek candidates with a background in machine learning and/or Seismology, preferably with experience in time series analysis.

The position is offered in the context ofALLIESpostdoctoral training program in Artificial Intelligenceled by the Spanish National Research Council, coordinated through the AIHUB Connection, and co-funded by the European Union under the HORIZON EUROPE MSCA COFUND program framework. ALLIES aims to recruit 17 postdoctoral researchers in 3 different Calls who will conduct interdisciplinary and intersectorial research in Artificial Intelligence aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals.

The candidates will be working with Dr. Antonio Villaseñor (ICM) and Dr José Enrique Garcia (IFIC). He/she will expend one year at each research instituteand will be part of a vibrant and interdisciplinary ALLIES community.

Specific Requirements

  • Develop methodologies based on AI (including but not limited to Deep Learning) to detect submarine earthquakes using DAS data, and assess its potential for tsunami generation.
  • Develop methodologies to identify other natural and anthropogenic processes that generate acoustic signals recorded on DAS, such as: internal waves and tides, marine mammals, ship traffic, submarine landslides, gas emissions from the seafloor, etc.
  • Build and train Machine Learning models to detect submarine earthquakes and other oceanographic processes that generate acoustic signals.
  • Implement these models in operational environments for existing submarine cables in the Iberian Peninsula and Canary Islands (including data acquired during the 2021 La Palma volcanic eruption).
