WHO YOU’LL WORK WITH

The position within Bain’s Editorial Department of Senior Data Visualisation Content Editor / Senior Data Journalist is responsible for creating arresting and compelling visuals, charts and data visualizations that convey Bain’s insights, data analysis, and thought leadership across a variety of formats ranging from infographics and interactives to white papers and online articles. The Senior Data Visualisation Content Editor / Senior Data Journalist will support Bain’s Partners and practices by working with Practice Editors during content development to reimagine their data for external publication and suggest and develop innovative ways to display key insights. The Senior Data Visualisation Content Editor / Senior Data Journalist will work closely with the Editorial, Brand Design, and other teams within the Marketing department to create visualizations that are accurate, on-brand, consistent, and work across all formats.

WHERE YOU’LL FIT WITHIN THE TEAM

The Senior Data Visualisation Content Editor / Senior Data Journalist must have a solid editorial understanding of—and intellectual curiosity about—the business topics in Bain’s publications, must be able to participate actively in conversations with Bain’s most senior Partners, and be able to quickly convey data visualization suggestions to those Partners verbally and via mock-ups, sketches, PowerPoint slides, and other appropriate means.

The Senior Data Visualisation Content Editor / Senior Data Journalist must be able to advance Bain's ongoing mission to deliver clear, concise, and valuable thought leadership to a time-starved, C-suite audience, simplifying and decluttering messaging to reveal only the sharpest insights. They must also be able to effectively convey the reasoning behind these distillations to Bain Partners, Practice Editors, and other stakeholders.

The Senior Data Visualisation Content Editor / Senior Data Journalist will have a strong eye for online display and design and a solid understanding of Bain’s brand guidelines. They will stay abreast of the latest trends and leaders in data visualization, especially on mobile.

WHAT YOU’LL DO

A Senior Data Visualisation Content Editor / Senior Data Journalist is a person who uses specialized software to create and modify visual representations of data, like charts, graphs, and maps, by adjusting the underlying data, design elements, and aesthetics to effectively communicate insights and stories from the information, often within a content management system or platform dedicated to data visualization.

Responsibilities and Duties :

• Bain’s Practice Editors help our Partners distill and refine their business insights and analysis for publication. The Data Visualization Editor plays a similar role, working with Partners and the Practice Editors to distill and publish key messages via data visualization.
• Serve as an internal consultant to Bain’s Practice Editors as they work with Bain’s Partners to publish Bain’s thought leadership insights in all formats :

• Sit in on calls between Practice Editors and Partners to provide data visualization guidance.

• Reimagine data visualizations provided by the practices (typically in PowerPoint) to create compelling data graphics.
• Suggest new data visualization opportunities based on a close reading of the content and the data set provided.
• Conceive, develop and produce charts, infographics, interactives, “scrollytelling”, and other data-led online imagery.
• Review and manage the data visualization work of Editorial and Brand Design team members and provide feedback on clarity, user experience, mobile display, load times, production efficiency, and reusability across formats (e.g., social, digital mailings, etc.).
• In collaboration with the Production Editors, help manage the choice of data visualization tools and approach to optimize production flow of data visualizations and interactives, balancing project complexity against deadlines and resource availability.
• Review data visualizations to ensure their graphic approach to quantitative information is accurate, intuitive, and on-brand. The Senior Data Visualisation Content Editor / Senior Data Journalist should be skilled at effectively communicating which approaches work best, which don’t and why.
• Stay up-to-date on the latest data visualization tools used by Bain’s consulting teams; devote time to learning how these tools are used with clients and how they can be used in Bain’s various publications.
• Develop, document, and advocate for Bain’s approaches to published data visualization, including user interface, common features (e.g., standard buttons and UX), label usage and position, etc.
• Learn, understand, and advocate for the Bain brand and all design requirements associated with the brand.
• Develop and maintain a stable of talented freelance data visualization producers.

ABOUT YOU

Skills needed for a Senior Data Visualisation Content Editor / Senior Data Journalist :

• Data analysis skills : Understanding statistical concepts and data manipulation techniques.
• Visual design skills : Familiarity with color theory, typography, and layout principles.
• Technical proficiency : Knowledge of data visualization software and its features.
• Communication skills : Ability to translate complex data into clear and compelling visuals with supporting explanations.
• Storytelling ability : Crafting narratives around data insights to engage the audience.

Qualifications :

• Superb data visualization and design skills, coupled with demonstrated experience interpreting and displaying business concepts through powerful visuals.
• Proven experience working directly with data graphics in an Editorial department or editorial context.
• Expert knowledge of Adobe Creative Cloud.
• Experience with Flourish, Infogram, Figma and other third-party data visualization tools a strong plus.
• Experience with Optimizely (Episerver) CMS platform is a plus.
• Proven experience recruiting, maintaining and managing a stable of freelance designers.
• Experience with Tableau, Alteryx and other data visualization tools is a plus.
• Ability to work effectively under deadlines and manage multiple projects with evolving requirements.
• Solid experience and understanding of corporate branding, layout, color and typography, preferably in both print and digital media. Experience with traditional print media is a plus.
• Self-starter with strong customer service, teamwork and organizational skills.
• Work independently as well as collaboratively in cross-functional teams.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills required.
• Bachelor’s degree preferred, with a concentration in math or statistics, data visualization, graphic design or other relevant studies.
• MA or MBA preferred but not required.
