Position Summary:

The Underwriting Director is responsible for planning, coordinating, monitoring, analyzing, and evaluating the activities of underwriting staff. Their goal is to achieve department objectives and ensure company profitability through new and existing business.

What will your job entail?

Job Responsibilities:

  1. Develop and implement underwriting strategies, policies, and guidelines for product lines, ensuring alignment with organizational goals and profitability.
  2. Analyze complex information from various sources (financial documents, market data, etc.) to evaluate risk levels associated with insuring individuals or entities.
  3. Establish financial control guidelines, administrative standards, and best practices.
  4. Research competitors and market conditions to maintain risk selection criteria and methods.
  5. Lead and manage a team of underwriters, ensuring efficient operations and adherence to underwriting standards.
  6. Oversee portfolio performance, review Jumbo loans, escalations, and portfolio requests.
  7. Stay informed about legal and regulatory changes, ensuring all decisions comply with industry standards.
  8. Collaborate with product teams to create new insurance offerings and enhance existing ones.
  9. Interact with brokers, agents, and clients to address inquiries and provide exceptional service.
  10. Monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) related to underwriting efficiency, accuracy, and profitability.

Work Experience and Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Risk Management or Business.
  • 12+ years of Underwriting experience.
  • 5+ years of management experience.

Licenses & Certifications:

  • Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU), Associate in Commercial Underwriting (AU), Associate in Personal Insurance (API), or Registered Professional Liability Underwriter (RPLU) is preferred.
