The Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics in Garching near Munich is a world leader in the field of ground-based and space-based experimental astronomy. The institute develops and operates state-of-the-art astronomical instruments for this purpose. The technical fields of electronics and mechanics play a fundamental role in this.

The IT group manages and maintains the IT infrastructure and central IT services of the institute. It also develops scientific software and applications for ongoing scientific projects as well as specific control software for detectors and satellites under construction.

To support the technical areas of mechanics and electronics at the Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics, the IT group is looking for a

IT system administrator with focus on Windows (m / f / d)

Reference number 10 / 2025

Your task is to work closely with the technical departments to support and further develop their IT landscape. Among other things, the aim is to digitize and optimize the collaboration between the technical departments and the scientific projects using our central IT infrastructure.

Your tasks for the technical areas include :

  • Administration, license management, backup management and inventory of the IT landscape
  • Administration of virtualization environments (VMware, Proxmox)
  • Technical organization of IT security management
  • Acting as a coordinating interface between the technical areas, the IT group, IT security, and the administrative area
  • Second level support for the workstations
  • A degree in computer science or comparable training
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Active Directory and experience with classic Microsoft Windows server and client administration
  • Confident handling of shell programming (especially Windows and Linux)
  • Basic knowledge of networks
  • Reliable and sustainable documentation
  • Advanced network knowledge and a basic understanding of the requirements of complex CAD / CAM solutions and MS SharePoint are an advantage
  • Very good written and spoken English skills are required
  • The willingness and ability to take initiative and work in a team
