The Carlos III National Cancer Research Center Foundation is seeking applications for the position of Scientific Director of the Spanish National Cancer Research Center (CNIO). Established in 1998, CNIO is a leading cancer research institute with over 400 researchers across 33 groups, dedicated to excellence in oncology research. It is recognized globally for its scientific productivity and impact, with a diverse international staff and English as the working language.

Governance and Structure

CNIO is a public foundation governed by a Board of Trustees, with a Scientific Direction responsible for its scientific activities. It also has a Scientific Advisory Board composed of eminent international scientists, which evaluates the center's scientific output and advises on strategic issues.

Responsibilities of the Scientific Director

  • Establish and lead CNIO's scientific policy.
  • Propose and oversee the integration of research staff and groups.
  • Collaborate with the Scientific Advisory Board and manage scientific strategies and activities.
  • Develop strategic plans and ensure their implementation.
  • Report on scientific progress and prepare annual activity reports.
  • Represent CNIO institutionally.
  • Coordinate all scientific programs and maximize scientific output with available resources.
  • Secure funding and develop new scientific initiatives.

Selection Process

The application deadline is 40 calendar days from the publication date. The process aims to conclude within six months and involves a selection committee comprising national and international experts, chaired by the Secretary of State for Science, Innovation and Universities. The appointment is made by the CNIO Board of Trustees.
