AS Legal Counsel, Iberia within AXA XL, will be dealing with day-to-day requests for legal advice from local management (especially Country Management and Underwriting Teams) and colleagues abroad interested in business opportunities in Spain, Portugal, and reinsurance in Latin America (related to freedom of services, licensing, policy design, product development, distribution, reinsurance agreements, outsourcing, and legal matters).

You will be part of the Spanish branch Extended Management Team, collaborating with internal stakeholders, including the APAC Europe Business Unit and other functions. You will lead and develop the local legal team to provide effective, timely advice.

Essential responsibilities include:

  1. Supporting Country Management in governance, compliance, and internal controls, ensuring alignment with AXA XL's objectives and regulations, including participation in management committees.
  2. Conducting local legal training sessions as needed.
  3. Reviewing marketing, commercial materials, and press releases.
  4. Liaising with authorities and industry associations, managing filings.
  5. Overseeing local litigations and reporting to the APAC Europe General Counsel.
  6. Providing wording support and legal advice across business lines, including drafting guidance and post-bind reviews.
  7. Approving commercial contracts and collaborating with Procurement.
  8. Monitoring legal, compliance, and regulatory changes, focusing on insurance, distribution, contracts, and financial crime laws.
  9. Supporting XLICSE compliance and regulatory topics, assisting with inspections, training, and implementation of supervisory requirements, especially regarding complaints handling.
  10. Providing monthly reports for branch activities.
  11. Managing external counsel activities.
  12. Supporting AXA XL / Group projects with various departments.
  13. Leading and developing a legal associate.
  14. Engaging with internal stakeholders and key AXA stakeholders in Spain.

You will report to the Head of Legal France & Southern Europe and the Country Manager Iberia.

Qualifications and skills:

  • Master’s degree in Law; being a qualified lawyer is a plus.
  • Experience in Legal & Compliance within the insurance sector, either in-house or at a law firm.
  • Specialized in insurance and reinsurance law, litigation, compliance, commercial, and civil law.
  • Fluent in English and Spanish; Portuguese is a plus.
  • Excellent communication, commercial acumen, and ability to explain complex issues clearly.
  • Problem-solving skills, decision-making, and solution orientation.
  • People management experience is highly valued.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Team-oriented, with integrity, resilience, flexibility, and strong social skills.
