Canonical is building a comprehensive automation suite to provide multi-cloud and on-premise data solutions for the enterprise. The data platform team develops managed solutions for various data stores and technologies, including big data, NoSQL, cache-layer capabilities, analytics, and structured SQL engines (similar to Amazon RDS approach).

We are tackling the challenge of fault-tolerant, mission-critical distributed systems and aim to deliver the world's best automation solutions for managed data platforms.

We seek candidates from junior to senior levels with interests and experience in Big Data technologies, such as distributed event-stores (Kafka) and parallel computing frameworks (Spark). Engineers at Canonical are mindful of open-source community dynamics and understand the needs of large, innovative organizations.

Location: This is a globally remote role.

What your day will look like

The data platform team automates data platform operations, managing and integrating Big Data platforms at scale. Responsibilities include ensuring fault-tolerant replication, TLS, installation, backups, and providing domain-specific expertise to other teams. This role focuses on creating and automating infrastructure features, not data analysis or processing.

• Collaborate proactively with a distributed team.
• Write high-quality, idiomatic Python code to develop new features.
• Debug issues and interact with upstream communities publicly.
• Work with talented engineers and experts across fields.
• Discuss ideas and collaborate on solutions.
• Work from home with global travel for 2 to 4 weeks per year for internal and external events.

What we are looking for in you

• Proven hands-on experience in software development using Python.
• Proven experience with distributed systems like Kafka and Spark.
• Bachelor's or equivalent degree in Computer Science, STEM, or similar.
• Willingness to travel up to 4 times a year for internal events.

Additional Skills That You Might Also Bring

Experience with other data platform technologies, SQL (MySQL, PostgreSQL, Oracle, etc.), NoSQL (MongoDB, Redis, ElasticSearch, etc.), Linux systems administration, cloud solutions (public or private), or Kubernetes is a plus and can influence the level considered.
