Job Description

We invite applications for a fully funded, part-time, 4-year Post-doc position to work within the research line : Gender, Material Culture, and Maintenance Activities in Colonial Situations. Funded by the ERC project : ERC-2023-AdG Material Culture, Gender, and Maintenance Activities in Making and Resisting Early Modern Colonial Globalization. A Long-term Perspective from the Mariana Islands (MaGMa).

The candidate will investigate the impacts of Catholic missions on health systems, careways, and attention to others in the Mariana Islands (16th-19th centuries).

The successful candidate will join the research team led by Professor Sandra Montón Subías at Pompeu Fabra University, Barcelona. The research will involve analyzing data from archives, archaeological collections, and excavations to explore :

  • Practices and institutions related to healing, healers, surgeons, Jesuits in the Mariana Islands.
  • Information on childbirth.
  • Material culture and remedies related to healing (pre-colonial and colonial).
  • Maintenance activities and healing practices.
  • Health status (pre-colonial and colonial).
  • Gendered healing patterns.
  • Social values attached to healing.
  • Gendered effects of care on human bodies, including post-mortem uses.
  • Transmissions of care-giving knowledge, skills, and technology across continents (e.g., medicinal botany via Manila galleons).
  • Ethnobotany and archaeobotany.

The candidate should be willing to live and work in Barcelona.

General

  • Hold a PhD degree at the time of application.
  • Have no record of suspension via disciplinary procedures or legal barring from public service, including for foreign nationals.

These criteria must be valid at application and contract signing.

Terms and Conditions

The postdoctoral contract is a fixed-term, full-time research position at Universitat Pompeu Fabra, with an annual gross stipend of approximately €35,594.04, lasting 4 years.

Work space will be at the Universitat Pompeu Fabra, in Barcelona, in shared offices.

Selection Process

Applications will be evaluated based on merit, with a maximum of 50 points distributed as follows :

  • Experience with primary sources related to the Mariana Islands and archaeobotany : 10 points
  • Knowledge of feminist, gender, and maintenance activities theory : 10 points
  • Knowledge of modern medicine history : 10 points
  • Knowledge of Jesuits in medicine : 10 points
  • Experience in archaeological excavation : 5 points

The minimum passing score is 30. CVs must clearly demonstrate relevant experience. Interviews or references may be used for further assessment.
