Job Title: Senior Data Engineer

We are seeking a Senior Data Engineer to own the architecture and development of our core data platform, including data warehouse design, infrastructure development, data modeling in collection tools, and support for data system integrations.

Location: Remote First role, with a preference for candidates based in Spain or Germany due to company registered locations. Candidates within +/- 2hrs CET are considered.

Responsibilities

1. Data Platform Ownership: Lead design and implementation to ensure scalability and robustness.
2. Data Modeling: Engage in data modeling for third-party tools like Benchling, optimizing data structures for integration and use. Support stakeholders with insights and recommendations to improve data models.
3. Data Visualization and Analytics: Develop analytics layers, dashboards, and support ML development to foster a data-driven culture.
4. Cloud Infrastructure Management: Manage cloud infrastructure supporting data operations and applications.
5. Strategic Planning: Contribute to the tech roadmap aligning with business goals.
6. Supervision and Mentorship: Oversee and mentor junior team members, ensuring best practices and high-quality code.
7. Cross-Domain Collaboration: Work with domain experts, software engineers, and data scientists to model data and ensure seamless integration of pipelines and ML services.

Qualifications

• At least 3 years of proven experience in data engineering and platform architecture, especially in startup/scale-up environments.
• Strong experience in data modeling, database design, and scientific data modeling (preferred).
• Ability to lead challenging projects in research or similar settings.
• Collaborative mindset with open communication skills.
• Proficiency in SQL and Python for ETL pipelines.
• Advanced knowledge of cloud services, with experience in Google Cloud Platform or AWS preferred.
• Experience working in remote/hybrid teams.
• Good command of English.
• Adaptability to changing technology and business needs.
• Continuous learner mindset.

Optional: Experience with materials engineering, chemistry, or biological data modeling.
