Title and Summary

Director, Public Policy Iberia

The Director of Public Policy, Iberia, will be responsible for managing and maintaining relationships between Mastercard and politicians, regulators, government officials, and key third-party stakeholders in the Iberia region. This includes both domestic and EU matters of interest to Mastercard.

The role involves overseeing the logistical operations of the department, managing relationships with consultancy support and other suppliers, and developing thought leadership and stakeholder engagement strategies across Spain and Portugal. The director will also coordinate with Mastercard’s Public Policy colleagues to ensure consistent messaging and approach.

The position supports the development and implementation of Mastercard’s Public Policy strategy, aligning with the company's multi-rail vision—offering both card and account-to-account payment solutions.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Oversight of the Iberia Public Policy Department: Ensure alignment of strategies with overall business objectives and support Spanish and Portuguese teams.
  2. Development of Policy Positions: Collaborate internally to develop policy responses and thought leadership on various issues.
  3. Stakeholder Engagement: Represent Mastercard in relevant groups, strengthen relationships, and manage external engagement programs.
  4. External Communication: Organize public policy events, develop engagement materials, and communicate Mastercard’s views effectively.
  5. Internal Communication and Intelligence: Provide briefings on political developments and ensure timely internal dissemination of information.
  6. Resource Management: Manage relationships with external consultancy and evaluate new working methods.
Qualifications and Experience
  • Experience in public policy, public affairs, or government relations, preferably in consultancy, in-house, or trade associations.
  • Knowledge of the political and legislative processes in the EU, Spain, and Portugal.
  • Strong communication skills in Spanish and English; Portuguese is a plus.
  • Ability to work collaboratively across a matrix organization and manage multiple priorities.
  • Desirable: experience with government or regulatory authorities, knowledge of payments/fintech/banking sectors, and experience working in multinational environments.
