The Critical Environment Manager (CEM) is a key resource for the technical management of operating data centers. The CEM is responsible for streamlining data center operations and maintenance, as well as removing risks in the data center's critical environment. They lead both recurrent (e.g., seasonal readiness) and ad-hoc technical projects to mitigate or remediate risks related to loss of resilience or redundancy in data centers.
The CEM collects technical data from Data4 Facility Managers and customers to define technical roadmaps and projects. They oversee all aspects of critical environment projects, from inception to completion, coordinating with engineering, operations, and facilities management teams to ensure seamless execution with minimal disruption. They are directly accountable for timely and budget-compliant project completion.
They identify and mitigate risks such as equipment failures, power outages, or environmental threats by implementing risk management strategies and contingency plans, including summer / winter readiness, load failover audits, etc. They ensure projects meet industry standards, regulatory requirements, and best practices, supporting QA processes and audits, and ensuring compliance with standards like Uptime Institute Tier Standards and ISO 27001.
The CEM engages external vendors, contractors, and stakeholders, monitoring vendor performance and adherence to project specifications and timelines. They stay updated on data center availability trends, conduct technical audits, and foster continuous improvement by reducing human errors, streamlining operations, and leveraging emerging technologies for performance optimization.
They communicate project updates, milestones, and key metrics to stakeholders, including customers and leadership, through reports and presentations. They promote trust and collaboration, assist team members and other managers in removing hurdles, and help create a shared technical vision and goals.
