The United Nations Office of Information and Communication Technology (OICT) develops and manages the Unite Aware technology platform to support situational awareness in UN Peace Operations. In partnership with the Integrated Training Service (ITS) of the Department of Peace Operations (DPO) the project aims to customize and deploy a complete Unite Aware training environment accessible to authorized users on the internet to support all instructor-led courses, whether virtual or in-person taking place in any facility, including Member States Peacekeeping Training Centres.

Duties and Responsibilities

This position is part of the United Nations Office of Information and Communication Technology's Enterprise Solutions Service (OICT/ESS).

The incumbent reports to and works under the supervision of the Technical Lead of Unite Aware.

The Data Engineering Specialist will be responsible for the following duties:

• Architect, analyze, integrate and manage data in order to build data models and data driven insights to generate significant organizational value;
• Implement data collection and integration procedures to gather information that is relevant for building and embedding analytic systems into user portals;
• Create models and processes to collect, distill and interpret data with a view to aid better, more informed decision making;
• Analyze a broad range of existing data sources;
• Examine and explore data from multiple disparate sources;
• Analyze and implement data pipelines to bring data from databases and APIs into the analytics platform;
• Processing, cleansing, and verifying the integrity of data used for analysis;
• Design and implement data marts and data pipelines using hybrid cloud technologies;
• Develop tabular cubes, database views, datasets and dataflows to expose data to visualization tools;
• Build machine learning solutions for monitoring, detection, automation and forecasting;
• Write documentation and prepare training materials;
• Perform other duties as required

Education

Advanced University degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in Applied Mathematics, Physics, Statistics, Computer Science, Information Systems / Technology, Business Administration, Engineering, or related field. We will consider a first level university degree with a combination of relevant academic qualifications and experience.

Language

Fluency in spoken and written English is required.

Experience Required

• A minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible professional experience in the field of Information and Communication Technologies, Engineering or other related fields is required.
• A minimum of three (3) years of experience in development, implementation and maintenance of data systems, integrations and ETLs or related areas is required;
• A minimum of three (3) years of experience with Microsoft SQL or other relational databases;
• A minimum of three (3) years of experience with MS Fabric;
• A minimum of three (3) years of experience developing with MS Microsoft SQL Server Integration
• A minimum of three (3) years of experience in data transformation with Python;
• Experience developing data models with DAX or MDX in MS SQL Server Analysis Services or Power BI;
• Experience leveraging Generative AI tools and Large Language Models (LLMs) to accelerate data transformation, scripting (Python, DAX, SQL), and data modeling;
• Experience in database modeling and datamart design;
• Experience in programming with C# and .Net;
• Experience with MS machine learning and AI solutions;
• Experience in REST APIs;
• Familiarity with data automation techniques;
• Familiarity with big data frameworks such as Spark and Hadoop;
• Knowledge of Agile/Scrum methodologies;

The position is either based in Valencia, Spain if you already have the right to work in Spain, or can be remote in Europe.
