Offer Description

The Systems Biotechnology group at the Instituto de Catálisis Petroleoquímica - Spanish National Research Council (ICP-CSIC) is seeking a dedicated graduate student with a Master's degree to pursue a PhD in Biotechnology, Bioinformatics, and Machine Learning as part of a 3-year contract (Category M3; gross salary of 2,318.93 euros in 14 payments) funded by the Regional Government of Madrid under the "César Nombela" Talent Attraction Grant (ref. 2024-T1ECO-31227).

The project aims to utilize Bioinformatics and Machine Learning to identify and design enzymes capable of degrading organic polymers and composite materials, which will then be integrated into microbes using synthetic biology techniques. Specific tasks include:

  1. Generating structural models of target proteins/enzymes using AlphaFold or related tools.
  2. Applying machine learning methods to predict properties such as expression and activity levels of these proteins/enzymes.
  3. Mapping protein–ligand interaction energy landscapes for biocatalyst screening and engineering using molecular modeling techniques.

Candidates should have a degree in biotechnology or a related field with a minimum average score of 8.0/10. Proficiency in English is required. Previous experience in biotechnological, biocatalysts, bioinformatics, or computational research is valued.
