Job Description:

ARQUIMEA is a technology company operating globally and providing innovative solutions and products in highly demanding sectors, including Aerospace, Defense & Security, Big Science, Biotechnology, and Fintech.

In ARQUIMEA SPACE, we develop spaceflight parts and equipment for satellites and launchers. We specialize in thermal control systems, structural panels, optical payloads, avionics, release and deployment mechanisms, and rad-hard microelectronics. Together with our tech partners, we provide high-throughput smallsats and their subsystems.

We are looking for a Avionics Systems Engineer responsible for the system design, development, integration, and testing of avionics subsystems, including flight computers, power generation and distribution, communication systems, sensors, and actuators, working closely with multidisciplinary teams to ensure that the avionics architecture meets mission requirements.

Tasks to be performed:

  • Evaluate customer and operational needs to define requirements, integrate technical parameters, and assure compatibility of all physical, functional, and program interfaces.
  • System Design & Architecture: Develop avionics system architecture of the entire satellite, ensuring compatibility with spacecraft mission requirements.
  • Oversee the selection, procurement, and testing of electronic components from external providers or internal developments.
  • Perform size, weight, power, cost budget analysis, trade studies, simulation, and optimization of satellite avionics.
  • Lead the system design, development, and verification of the On Board Data Handling (OBDH) subsystem, including FDIR, operational modes, redundancies, data buses, Telemetry (TM), and Telecommand (TM).
  • Lead the system design, development, and optimization of satellite Electrical Power Subsystems, including power generation, storage, distribution, and regulation.
  • Lead the system design, development, and verification of the Communication systems, propulsion entire subsystem, and AOCS entire subsystem (including sensors and actuators).
  • Hardware & Software Integration: Work with electrical, software, and mechanical engineers to integrate avionics components such as flight computers, sensors, and telemetry systems.
  • Testing & Validation: Conduct environmental, functional, and performance testing of avionics systems, including hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) and software-in-the-loop (SIL) simulations, and launch preparation.
  • Troubleshooting & Anomaly Resolution: Lead the resolution of significant avionics-related issues during the entire project lifetime.
  • Documentation & Compliance: Generate technical documentation including design reviews, requirements and specifications documents, interface control documents, and verification and integration test plans.

Required skills, experience and candidate profile:

  • Bachelor's or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related field.
  • Master’s or PhD in Electrical Engineering or Aerospace Engineering related technical discipline is a plus.
  • Strong knowledge and proficiency in at least one of the following areas:

-Satellite Electrical Power Systems – Including solar arrays, batteries, battery management systems, power distribution, electric propulsion, isolation and grounding, electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), fault tolerance, and thermal management.

-On-Board Data Handling (OBDH) – Covering failure detection, isolation, and recovery (FDIR), operational modes, redundancies, data buses, telemetry (TM), and telecommand (TC).

-Spacecraft Architecture Design – With an emphasis on attitude and orbit control systems (AOCS), propulsion, and communication subsystems.

  • +10 years of experience in any of the following areas: spacecraft OBDH, spacecraft Electrical Power Subsystem, or as spacecraft avionics architect.
  • Experience with requirements management tools.
  • Familiarity with reliability, FMECA, radiation and Worst Case analysis and tools.
  • Knowledge of radiation-hardened electronics and space-qualified components.
  • Hands-on experience with avionics hardware, including processors, FPGAs, sensors, actuators, and communication systems.
  • Understanding communication protocols, such as CAN, RS-4XX, Ethernet, SpaceWire, and others.
  • Understanding of real-time operating systems (RTOS) for spacecraft avionics.
  • Experience with digital, analog, mixed signal, and power design and analysis processes for space programs from a systems point of view.
  • Hands-on experience with spacecraft integration and environmental testing (thermal vacuum, vibration, radiation, and EMC/EMI).
  • Familiarity with antenna and RF systems for spacecraft TT&C.
  • Experience working with product/component developers and vendors supply chain.
  • Proficiency in analysis tools and simulation software (e.g. SPICE, Altium, MathCAD, MATLAB, Simulink, ANSYS STK).
  • Familiarity with electronics lab test equipment (oscilloscopes, multimeters, spectrum analyzers, RF test beds, etc.).
  • Knowledge of cybersecurity and experience implementing cybersecurity measures in embedded systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead cross-functional teams and manage complex technical projects from concept to delivery.
  • Familiarity with industry standards and requirements related to satellite power systems (e.g., ECSS, NASA standards).
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance, if required.
