First-of-its-kind chip patterning technology.

Backed by top-tier investment partners across the globe.

Generous relocation assistance to reach the brightest minds in this space.

We're supporting an VC-backed startup, who are developing a novel lithography platform that will re-invent semiconductor manufacturing through atom-based chip patterning. With extensive backing from some huge investment partners, they're now scaling up, creating a need for an Atom Optics Physicist to join their instrument modelling team in Barcelona, Spain.

Please note that whilst this role is based in Barcelona, Spain, the team will offer generous support with relocation costs, to ensure a seamless transition into the business.

What experience will I need?

  • Academic background in atomic, molecular, and optical physics (AMO), including laser cooling, atom-light interactions, and quantum optics.
  • Knowledge of classical & quantum optics, including laser physics. Research experience should cover :
  • Advanced laser cooling (doppler, optical molasses, sisphys, raman, bichromatic)
  • Magneto-optical force & manipulation
  • Atom trapping, interferometry, manipulation
  • Skilled in scientific programming using Python or Julia for modeling and simulation. Familiarity with C++, MATLAB, or COMSOL is a bonus.
  • Track record of first-author publications is a strong asset.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to contribute in a multidisciplinary, collaborative team.

What will my day-to-day look like?

This position leads the theoretical and computational design of atom manipulation for the business’ novel lithography platform. You’ll lead the development of numerical models and simulations for laser cooling, light–matter interactions, and atomic beam control, applying your knowledge of AMO physics to simulate multi-level atomic systems, quantum dynamics, and atom–photon interactions. You’ll work primarily in Python, Julia, or C++, building robust tools to model processes, such as Doppler and Raman cooling, diffraction, and atom optics, at high fidelity.

Core responsibilities include developing and validating numerical solvers for laser cooling and atom-light interactions; simulating atomic beam dynamics, including trapping, deflection, and interferometry; and optimising phase-space properties for lithographic applications. You’ll design simulations and experimental configurations for neutral atom control, contribute to the layout of optical and vacuum systems, and work closely with experimental teams to validate and refine your models against real-world data.

What do they offer in return?

As well as a competitive salary in line with your experience, the team advocates for flexible working and try to accommodate all personal circumstances where they can. Their benefits package is also tailored, giving you an annual wellness allowance and a bunch of personal development opportunities, on top of regular appraisals. Every early-employee is entitled to equity, and they offer generous assistance with relocating to the area, to ensure you’re comfortable with the move from day one.
