Overview

Offer Description

Applications are invited by the University of Alicante President to create a pre-shortlist of candidates for the recruitment of research staff (contract type: open-ended contract; job category: assistant researcher) to collaborate with the funded line of research “Machine learning methods and models for acoustic and sound signals”. Reference: I-PI 74-25

The call follows the regulations governing calls for applications of research staff and establishes the mandatory use of electronic submission for applications, documentation, payments, communications, and all procedures of the selection process for temporary staff and research staff. Terms are set as described.

General terms

1. The purpose of this call is to create a pre-shortlist of candidates for the recruitment of research staff (assistant researcher) in the framework of the projects included in the funded line of research “Machine learning methods and models for acoustic and sound signals”.

2. Unit in charge of the line of research: University Institute for Computer Research.

3. The first project, number of vacancies, and job characteristics are set out in the annex. After the first project ends or budget permits, successful applicant(s) may join other projects within the same line of research.

4. The panel may create a talent pool including candidates whose applications were unsuccessful but who participated in all stages. The pool may require a minimum score for inclusion and will be listed in descending order by score. Candidates may be contacted to cover project needs as long as tasks match the job profile. If offers are made, candidates will be contacted in pool order. Participants added to the pool after contract end will be placed by score.

In accordance with equal opportunities requirements, the percentage distribution in contractual vacancies is 51.35% for women and 48.65% for men, ensuring no under-representation in this job category.

Requirements for applicants

Compliance with the requirements listed below must refer to the deadline for submission and be maintained until contract entry. Applicants must:

2.1. Hold or be in the process of obtaining an undergraduate degree in Computer Engineering or Artificial Intelligence Engineering (MECES level 2 / EQF level 6) and an official Master’s degree in Computer Engineering or Data Science (MECES level 3 / EQF level 7), or equivalent. If the degree certificate is not yet available, provide proof of payment for the diploma issuing fee or an academic certificate showing completion of studies leading to the certificate.

2.2. Provide documentation for qualifications obtained overseas confirming official approval or comparability. If not yet secured by the deadline, evidence of initiation of the official process is required. Documents in languages other than official Valencia Region languages must be accompanied by sworn translations.

2.3. Have a C1 level of English.

2.4. Have a C1 level of Catalan.

2.5. Be a Spanish national or be in one of the situations listed in article 57 of Royal Legislative Decree 5/2015. In some cases, entry into the contract requires legal residence in Spain.

2.6. Have a good command of any official Valencia Region language for the job.

2.7. Be at least 16 years old and not exceed the maximum compulsory retirement age.

2.8. Possess the physical and mental capacities required for the functions, with a medical certificate before signing the contract. Medical examinations may be carried out by the University of Alicante Occupational Health Service.

2.9. Not have been dismissed or disqualified from public service. Nationals of other states must not be disqualified from public employment. If any condition is not met during the process, the candidate must withdraw or will be excluded.

Submission of applications

By submitting an application, candidates confirm truthfulness and compliance with all requirements. They undertake to provide proof of information. Translations may be required for documents not in official Valencia Region languages. Merits without valid proof by the correction deadline will not be considered. Originals and sworn translations may be requested during the process.

Two-stage selection system: merit-based assessment and personal interview (which may be conducted in English). The interview is mandatory and scores from 0 to 2. Identity must be demonstrated as described for Spanish and non-Spanish applicants. The panel may create a talent pool as described in the General terms above.

2. Number of vacancies and features of the job vacancy.

2.1. Contract terms depend on project funding.

2.3. Job position: assistant researcher.

2.4. Working hours: 37.5 hours per week in morning/afternoon sessions.

2.5. Remuneration: €2,500 gross per month (plus statutory extras).

2.6. Tasks to be carried out:

  • Design, develop and train machine learning models for automatic speech recognition.
  • Process and prepare audio/text data for transcription models (segmentation, alignment, normalisation, feature extraction).
  • Fine-tune existing models and perform multilingual training.
  • Evaluate model performance using metrics such as WER and CER.
  • Integrate developed models with platforms/software and test in real or simulated environments.
  • Experiment planning and execution for model improvement (hyperparameters, cross-validation, results analysis).
  • Prepare technical documentation in Spanish and Catalan (and possibly English) and, if required, write scientific articles in English.
  • Collaborate with the research team in meetings and discussions.

Third. Job profile

Preference will be given to those with :

3.1 Experience and training related to the tasks in section 2 and:

  • Processing sound signals, feature extraction, and selection.
  • Speech recognition, speaker classification and verification.
  • Use and adaptation of speech recognition models.
  • Python and sound-processing libraries.
  • PyTorch, HuggingFace, Docker and Kaldi.
  • Use of code repositories for versioning and traceability.

3.2. Knowledge of English. Higher levels than those in section 2 will be considered.

3.3. Knowledge of Catalan. Higher levels than those in section 2 will be considered.

3.4. Qualifications: official Master’s degree in Computer Engineering or Data Science (MECES 3 / EQF 7) or equivalent.
