As an Assistant General Counsel (Technology Assets) as part of our Technology Legal Team, you will be based in one of our European offices. The Technology Legal Team has global responsibilities covering a wide range of technology legal topics, including (i) advising and reviewing new technology products (assets) and services; (ii) acting as product counsel to our internal and client-facing teams responsible for technology products and services; (iii) analyzing, advising, and preparing for regulatory changes in artificial intelligence, data localization, cyber security, intellectual property, and technology more broadly; (v) advising our information security team and security operations center; and (vi) supporting our regional lawyers in their work involving technology.

All of our Technology Legal Team members assist across topics. Your role will focus primarily on our asset portfolio—reviewing new assets in development and acting as product counsel throughout an asset’s lifecycle. Over time your role may involve other aspects of our team’s work.

You will work closely with the wider McKinsey Legal Department and other firm functions including our Technology Ecosystem, Cyber Security, Risk, and Compliance to structure, negotiate and execute arrangements regarding assets from inception to completion. There will be opportunities to work with and learn from experienced lawyers with backgrounds in a wide range of technology related legal specialties.

In this role, you will review and advise our consulting and asset teams on technology products that we build as a service to our firm and clients. You will monitor regulatory proposals and changes, developing strategies for implementing regulatory requirements, and educating our teams outside of legal on regulatory developments in their space. You will counsel consultants on a variety of other legal issues and work with them as they proceed through the firm’s risk and economic committee approval processes, taking an active role in internal knowledge and learning, e.g., developing precedent documents and rolling-out training for firm leadership, the wider McKinsey Legal Department, and other firm functions. You will also identify best practices to address legal and professional issues impacting the firm’s business, including counseling consultants on the application of McKinsey’s internal policies, as well as draft, review and negotiate complex contracts relating to asset deployment, software, artificial intelligence, data analytics, cyber security, and data usage. Negotiations will entail frequent interaction with McKinsey clients and consultants.

  • Law degree (e.g., LLB, JD), and licensure to practice law.
  • 5+ years’ experience advising on at least several of the matters referenced above.
  • Team player who is highly collaborative, collegiate, and flexible with a willingness to take on new, unexpected and challenging assignments.
  • Commercial awareness, including the ability to identify the most salient pressure points in complex and varied technological scenarios.
  • Excellent project management skills, with the ability to readily switch between pragmatism and in-depth analysis.
  • Excellent organization capabilities, including the ability to initiate tasks independently and see them through to completion.
  • Excellent communication abilities, conveying information clearly in written and verbal form, with the ability to translate large amounts of complex information into a digestible format capable of understanding by busy, non-legal professionals.
  • Proficient in rational decision making based on data, facts, and logical reasoning.
  • Ability to create work product-focused materials / outputs, which may include PowerPoint decks, Excel models, articles, or other written deliverables.
  • Exceptional time management to meet your responsibilities in a complex and largely autonomous work environment.
  • Ability to work or attend meetings outside of traditional business hours or take on projects with limited or no notice at times.
  • Comfort in a highly challenging, fast-paced and dynamic environment.
