ISGlobal is seeking a dynamic exposure scientist / climate scientist / environmental epidemiologist who is interested in taking over and managing activities of the projects intoDBP and BWater. Objectives are to assess the links between water quality in finished drinking water and climate variables, including extreme weather events in the intoDBP case studies (Barcelona, Cyprus, Ireland) and compare health impacts associated with different water choices in the city of Barcelona.

intoDBP is a collaborative Horizon Europe project including 16 partners from 9 countries, aimed to create innovative tools and strategies to improve water quality management for safe human use and a healthy environment. ISGlobal is coordinator of Work Package 6 – EXPOSURE, aimed to increase the understanding of human exposure to disinfection by-products in European populations.

Bwater is a collaborative project with the Universitat Politècnica de Barcelona, and is funded by the Barcelona city council and Fundació “La Caixa”.

Key Responsibilities

The candidate will be involved in a range of research activities that will include data analysis, discussing findings with the team, writing reports / manuscripts, participating in annual and regular project meetings, presenting results in seminars or conferences, participating in group meetings, and attending ISGlobal scientific seminars.

Specific Duties

  1. Literature review to determine the state of knowledge about the influence of climate variables, including extreme weather events, on DBP concentrations in finished drinking water.
  2. Ascertain long time-series (e.g., 20-years) of routinely monitored drinking water quality parameters in finished drinking water (trihalomethanes-THMs, pH, conductivity, etc.) and climate variables (precipitation, temperature) in the study areas for the same period.
  3. Conduct a statistical analysis describing temporal patterns (seasonal, inter-annual) of THM concentrations and the climate variables.
  4. Create variables for extreme weather events (e.g., drought periods, floods, heat waves).
  5. Evaluate the associations between THM levels (total and its 4 components) with climate variables (precipitation, temperature) and extreme weather events at different scales (local, regional, national).

Training and Experience / Qualifications

Experience in advanced data analysis of climate and / or water quality data. Master in Public Health, Doctoral degree in environmental epidemiology, exposure science, climate science or other training in related fields.

Specific Requirements

Proficiency of statistical package use (e.g. R, STATA, etc.).

English. Fluent in Catalan and / or Spanish will be an asset.

Duration : 2 years

Contract : full time

Salary Range : will depend on the qualifications of the candidate.
