We announce a PhD position within the TRansient Plasmas in Planetary Atmospheres (TRAPPA) group at the IAA - CSIC in Granada, Spain. The position focuses on investigating atmospheric electricity phenomena, lightning's chemical role, using optical measurements from satellite instruments (LI, FCI, IRS, UVN), ground-based lightning networks, chemical measurements onboard MTG satellites, and modeling with WRF. The research aims to analyze the impact of lightning on atmospheric chemistry and pollution, utilizing data from the Atmospheric Space Interaction Monitor (ASIM) and other sources. The successful candidate will work on developing methods to quantify nitrogen oxides produced by lightning and investigate the chemical effects of lightning at regional and global scales.
Employment for 3 years (possible extension), gross salary 1600 EUR/month, full social security coverage, including health insurance. The start date is flexible but ideally September 16, 2025. Applicants must be registered as doctoral students at the University of Granada by early September 2025. Applications close on July 10, 2025, with decisions communicated by the end of July 2025.
