We announce one PhD (doctoral) position within the TRansient Plasmas in Planetary Atmospheres (TRAPPA) group at the IAA - CSIC in Granada, Spain.
The PhD will investigate atmospheric electricity phenomena, focusing on lightning's chemical role in the atmosphere, utilizing optical measurements from the Lightning Imager (LI) and the Flexible Combined Imager (FCI) onboard the Meteosat Third Generation (MTG), ground-based lightning measurements, and chemical measurements from instruments onboard the MTG-Sounder. The project also involves modeling with the Weather Research and Forecasting Model (WRF) and analysis of data from the Atmospheric Space Interaction Monitor (ASIM).
The position offers a full-time employment for 3 years, with a possible extension of 1 year, starting ideally on September 16, 2025. The salary is 1600 EUR/month with 14 payments, including full social security coverage.
The main task involves analyzing Meteosat Third Generation data to explore physical and chemical correlations between lightning activity and atmospheric pollution, developing methods to quantify NOx produced by lightning, and investigating the chemical role of lightning using WRF model simulations.
Applicants must be registered as doctoral students at the University of Granada by early September 2025. The application deadline is July 10, 2025. Final decisions will be communicated before the end of July 2025.
