The Reina Sofía School of Music is inviting applications for an Alexander Technique Professor. The post will be coordinated with the current Alexander Technique Professor and taught as a lecturer for the optional module within the Bachelor’s Degree in Higher Artistic Education in Music, 3 ECTS.

Responsibilities include approximately 100 hours per academic year, assessments, and signing official grades. Interviews and auditions will be held on dates announced for September 2026.

Formación

• Official higher education degree(s) in music education.
• Alexander Technique Teacher Diploma.
• Current membership in an international Alexander Technique teachers’ association.

The Reina Sofía School of Music was founded in 1991 as a project to help youth and musical culture. Since then, the School has worked to advance two objectives: to support the most talented young people in their personal and artistic development; and to bring the best music to all audiences.

Details about the position

The Reina Sofía School of Music is opening a call for applications for the position of Alexander Technique Professor. The Professor’s work will be coordinated and combined with the teaching duties of the Alexander Technique Professor already active, as a lecturer for the optional module within the Bachelor’s Degree in Higher Artistic Education in Music, 3 ECTS. Depending on the academic year and available places, the module may also be offered to students from other study programs as unofficial complementary training.

Job Requirements

The number of students varies each academic year, as it depends on registrations for the different optional subjects per year and degree pathway. The Professor’s responsibilities primarily include:

• Approximately 100 hours per academic year.
• Offer a weekly individual joint work session, practical in nature and approximately half an hour long, with each student for the academic year between September 2026 and June 2027.
• Foster each student’s self-critical sense and initiative in individual and personalized study.
• Provide assistance and guidance to students in understanding the fundamental ideas of the Alexander Technique applied to professional music practice.
• Guide students in identifying and releasing unnecessary muscular tension during instrumental or vocal performance, using the method’s characteristic hands‑on and verbal guidance.
• Work on inhibiting habitual reactions and tension patterns prior to musical gesture, promoting conscious body direction before and during performance.
• Adapt the principles of the Alexander Technique to the specific needs of each instrument or voice, addressing the student’s posture, breathing, and psychophysical coordination.
• Promote the prevention of injuries and disorders related to musical practice (such as tendinitis, postural pain, or dysphonia) through improved body use in study and performance.
• Presenting constructive written assessments and evaluations on the educational progress of the students (quarterly).
• Submitting grades in accordance with the requirements of the teaching guides and proposals of the relevant study program (annually).
• Be qualified to sign official grade reports (annually).

Main functions

• Official higher education degree (preferably a Bachelor’s Degree in Higher Artistic Education in Music, or a university Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree).
• Alexander Technique Teacher Diploma issued after a complete training of at least three years at a school accredited by an international organization (STAT, ATI, or equivalent).
• Current membership in an international professional association of Alexander Technique teachers (or proof of meeting the requirements for such membership).
• Languages: Intermediate/advanced level of spoken and written English and Spanish.
• Experience: Experience as a teacher in high‑performance centers will be valued.
