Job summary

NIRAS A/S invites you to join our Tunnels and Underground Structures team in Denmark. You will design underground structures—tunnel linings, shafts, diaphragms, cut-and-cover works—and explore soil-structure interaction, construction methods, and digital design tools on projects in Copenhagen, across Scandinavia and abroad.

You will be part of a growing department that values broad expertise, collaboration with geotechnical, bridge, hydraulic and environmental specialists, and close engagement

Qualifications

• MSc in Civil or Structural Engineering or equivalent.
• 5–15 years of design experience, with underground or heavy civil works.
• Broad profile across multiple underground structures and willingness to learn new ones.
• Working knowledge of Eurocodes and experience with finite element analysis.

Responsibilities

• Structural design of underground structures: tunnel linings, shafts, cut-and-cover structures, retaining walls and station structures.
• Analysis and modelling in finite element software.
• Assessment of soil-structure interaction, settlements and effects on neighbouring buildings and infrastructure.
• Design reports, technical specifications, drawing input and tender documentation.
• Close coordination with contractors, BIM colleagues and clients.
• Possible discipline lead responsibility, design coordination, or development of digital design tools depending on experience.

Job description

Would you like to design the structures that make our cities work below ground? Pipe jacking and segmental lining TBM tunnels, deep shafts, diaphragm walls, cut and cover structures, station boxes and cross passages, in Copenhagen, in Scandinavia and internationally.

We are looking for underground design engineers who work broadly across underground structures rather than within a single niche, and who enjoy moving between structural design, soil structure interaction and construction methodology. Our department is growing, and we are expanding the team to match a strong pipeline of tunnelling and underground projects in Denmark and abroad.
Depending on your experience, you will join us as an Engineer or as a Senior Engineer.

We are a specialist department of engineers working with the full life of an underground project: alignment and feasibility studies, TBM selection, lining design, shafts and deep excavations, settlement and building damage assessment, tender design, detailed design and site support.
We are a mix of Danish and international colleagues, we work in English and Danish, and we are used to sitting shoulder to shoulder with contractors and clients on design and build projects.

Your new workday will include

• Structural design of underground structures: tunnel linings, shafts, cut and cover structures, retaining walls and station structures
• Analysis and modelling in finite element software
• Assessment of soil structure interaction, settlements and the effect of our works on neighbouring buildings and infrastructure
• Design reports, technical specifications, drawing input and tender documentation

• Depending on your experience and interest, discipline lead responsibility, design coordination, or the development of our digital design tools

We are looking for applicants who can and wish to

You most likely have:

• An MSc in Civil or Structural Engineering, or an equivalent background
• Between 5 and 15 years of design experience, with a good part of it on underground or heavy civil structures
• A broad rather than narrow profile: you are comfortable across several types of underground structure and you enjoy learning the ones you have not met yet
• Working knowledge of Eurocodes and experience with finite element analysis
• Professional fluency in English. Danish or another Scandinavian language is an advantage
• An interest in digital tools, scripting or automation is a plus, but not a requirement
