Job summary

CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, seeks a mechanical technician to support upgrade projects of the CMS detector. You will lead workshop-based mechanical work, installation of detector systems, and the design and use of tooling for sub-detectors, while performing radioprotection duties in experimental areas and laboratories.

Qualifications

• Radioprotection knowledge and ability to work in classified areas.
• Experience managing a mechanical workshop and using standard machines/tools.
• Strong organisational skills for coordinating on‑site activities.
• Ability to read 2D/3D drawings and manufacture parts accordingly.
• Background in design/assembly of mechanical components and tooling.
• Experience installing structures and using specialised tooling for handling large equipment.
• Ability to work within multidisciplinary teams.
• Experience with hydraulic/mechanical/electromechanical systems is a plus.
• Higher technical diploma or equivalent experience in Mechanics or Manufacturing Methods.
• Trainings/certificates such as welding, radioprotection, hydraulics are a plus.

Responsibilities

• Ensure safety and radioprotection for subdetector removal/installation in classified areas.
• Manage a mechanical workshop, advise CMS subdetector teams, maintain equipment and supplies.
• Provide hands‑on support to CMS subdetector project teams in mechanical manufacturing, assembly, structures and welding.
• Develop, test, install and operate custom tooling for subdetectors with technical teams.
• Operate and maintain hydraulic, mechanical, and electromechanical systems.
• Organise storage of subdetector equipment in CMS‑reserved spaces with proper inventory.
• Assist safety officer and supervise infrastructure safety measures; operate mobile crane and forklift as needed.
• Serve as technical contact for mechanical activities with subdetector teams; report to Technical Coordination managers.
