About OSK Design

At OSK Design, we shape the future of the maritime industry through advanced ship design and consultancy. We specialise in passenger vessels, defence vessels, and complex special-purpose vessels, with a strong focus on energy efficiency and sustainable solutions.

Our ambition is clear:
To be recognised for bold and responsible ship design – maximising industry impact while minimising environmental footprint.
With offices in Denmark and Portugal, we combine Scandinavian engineering heritage with an international and collaborative working environment.

The Role

We are strengthening our Lisbon office and are looking for a Marine Engineer to join our Machinery Team.

We also welcome applications from Naval Architects who are motivated to specialise in machinery and ship systems.

In this role, you will be involved in the design and development of machinery systems for both newbuild vessels and retrofit projects, working across a diverse international portfolio.

You will contribute across the full project lifecycle - from early-stage concept design to detailed engineering and shipyard support.

Key Responsibilities

System Design & Integration

  • Design and develop machinery systems for newbuild vessels and retrofit solutions
  • Prepare machinery arrangements, piping systems, and engine room layouts
  • Contribute to HVAC system design and overall system integration
Propulsion & Energy Systems

You will support propulsion system definition and auxiliary systems design and participate in the development of advanced propulsion solutions, including:

  • Hybrid propulsion systems
  • Battery integration and energy storage systems
  • Alternative fuels (e.g. methanol, LNG, future fuel-ready concepts)

Furthermore you will participate in performing energy balance calculations and efficiency assessments

Discipline Interface
  • Coordinate with electrical and automation teams to ensure integrated and reliable solutions
Engineering Delivery
  • Prepare technical documentation and drawings (concept, basic and detailed design)
  • Ensure compliance with class, flag, and regulatory requirements
Collaboration & Client Interaction
  • Engage with clients, suppliers, and shipyards
  • Contribute to practical, buildable, and cost-efficient engineering solutions, both for new designs and upgrades of in-service vessels
A Typical Day at OSK Design

Your workday will vary depending on the project phase, but typically includes a mix of technical work, collaboration, and problem-solving across our offices and departments, Copenhagen, Århus and Lisbon:

  • Working on machinery system design for a new vessel project - developing piping layouts, reviewing engine room arrangements, or refining system integration
  • Contributing to retrofit projects, such as optimising existing systems, supporting decarbonisation initiatives, or adapting vessels to new regulatory requirements
  • Engaging in the design of state‑of‑the‑art vessels and propulsion systems
  • Collaborating with colleagues across disciplines (naval architects, electrical engineers, automation specialists) to ensure well‑integrated and high‑performance designs
  • Participating in project meetings with international teams, clients, and shipyards
  • Developing and reviewing technical documentation and drawings, from concept studies to detailed design
  • Discussing solutions with suppliers and shipyards to ensure designs are buildable, efficient, and cost‑effective
  • Learning from experienced engineers while progressively taking on greater responsibility in system design and technical decision‑making

You will be involved in both innovative newbuild designs and real‑world upgrades of in-service vessels, gaining exposure to cutting‑edge technologies as well as practical engineering challenges.

Qualifications
  • Degree in Marine Engineering and/or Naval Architecture with strong interest in machinery systems
  • Basic understanding of:
  • Machinery systems (piping, HVAC, auxiliary systems)
  • Electrical/automation interfaces (beneficial)
  • Experience with CAD tools (AutoCAD, Rhino, or equivalent)
  • Strong command of English
  • Comfortable working with Microsoft 365
  • Previous ship design or engine room experience is an advantage but not required.
Profile We Are Looking For
  • Strong engineering fundamentals with a system‑focused mindset
  • Interest in machinery systems and system integration within ship design
  • Ability to combine analytical thinking with practical engineering judgement
  • Comfortable working in international and multidisciplinary teams
  • Proactive and curious teamplayer that is motivated to develop
What We Offer
  • A key role in a growing Lisbon‑based engineering team
  • Exposure to international newbuild and retrofit projects
  • Work on advanced vessel concepts and future propulsion technologies
  • Strong mentoring and professional development opportunities
  • Flat organisational structure with direct access to senior expertise
  • Flexible working conditions and collaborative Scandinavian culture
