W3 Professorship in Neurology
The Faculty of Medicine of Justus Liebig University Giessen (JLU) and the University Hospital Giessen and Marburg GmbH (UKGM), Giessen Campus invite applications for a W3 Professorship in Neurology as of the earliest possible date. Reference is made to § 67 Para. 7 Hessian Higher Education Act (HessHG) and to the conditions of employment based on § 68 HessHG. Proficient knowledge of German is expected.
Responsibilities
- Represent the field of neurology in research, teaching and patient care across the entire spectrum.
- Focus clinical care on cerebrovascular diseases and expand interventional stroke therapy to improve therapeutic outcomes.
- Conduct research in inflammatory CNS diseases, neuro‑oncology and translational animal models, and engage existing collaborations such as with the Max Planck Institute for Heart and Lung Research in Bad Nauheim.
- Initiate and participate in multi‑side patient‑oriented clinical research and joint clinical studies, supported by the Coordination Center for Clinical Studies Marburg (KKS).
- Collaborate closely with the intensive care unit of the Clinic for Neurology and with units in neuroradiology, neurosurgery, neuropathology, digital technology and the MIRACUM Consortium big data initiative.
- Manage the neurointensive care unit with acute intensive care and diagnose and treat inflammatory and degenerative diseases of the central nervous system and neuromuscular disorders.
- Provide care for patients at the interdisciplinary neuro‑oncological centre.
- Participate in lectures in neurology and neurosurgery, seminars on the interdisciplinary subject Q11 and the elective course “Radiology and Interventional Therapy” as part of the neurology field.
- Actively participate in existing research networks, independently organize research projects and new collaborations, and contribute to the university’s focus areas.
- Support the promotion of young scientists and clinicians through the Giessen Graduate Centre for the Life Sciences, the structured doctoral program (JLU TRAINEE) and the clinician scientist program (JLU CAREER).
- Integrate gender aspects in research, teaching and patient care.
- Cooperate in university‑wide and cross‑university/hospital clinical research projects within the Research Campus of Central Hessen alliance.
Requirements
- University education in medicine with the qualification for scientific work according to § 67 Para. 1 HessHG, typically proven by a doctorate with merit and additional academic achievements such as a habilitation or internationally recognised publications in renowned national and international journals.
- Internationally recognised expertise in the field of neurology.
- Proof of a specialist qualification in neurology and the corresponding training authorisation.
- Management experience is an advantage.
- Experience in coordinating scientific projects in interdisciplinary networks and a proven track record in independently acquiring and managing externally funded projects (preferably DFG, BMFTR, EU).
- Proof of a special pedagogical aptitude to represent the specialist field of neurology in academic teaching with great commitment.
- In case the candidate exceeds the basic age limit of 50 years, a civil servant appointment under § 66 Para. 3 sentences 2 and 3 Hessian Higher Education Act (HessHG) in conjunction with § 11 Hessian Career Regulation (HLVO) requires a specific functional interest.
