Role overview

A founding UX/UI Designer is needed to shape the pre-trip experience on a consumer-facing educational travel platform. This role focuses on building the foundation of an in-house design system—defining visual language, components, and interaction patterns—while partnering with product managers and engineers across multiple autonomous pods. The position emphasizes rapid experimentation, AI-augmented workflows, and rigorous usability validation through collaboration with a customer insights team.

Responsibilities

• Own end-to-end interaction and visual design for features across multiple product pods, including flows, screens, component patterns, and visual polish


• Maintain clean, well-organized Figma libraries with reusable components, sensible naming, and engineering-ready handoff files


• Establish foundational design system elements such as type scale, color tokens, spacing rules, component patterns, and motion guidelines


• Produce low-fidelity prototypes for quick concept tests and high-fidelity screens for build-ready work


• Use AI tools to accelerate variation generation, copy drafts, visual exploration, and imagery mock-ups


• Participate in customer research sessions, observe usability findings, and translate insights into design iterations


• Communicate transparently about prioritization tradeoffs when serving multiple product managers and problem spaces

Requirements

• 2–4 years designing digital products with a portfolio demonstrating clean, on-brand UI and clear usable flows


• Strong point of view on visual and interaction craft, covering type, spacing, hierarchy, and motion


• Figma fluency including components, variants, auto-layout, prototyping, and tidy handoff files


• Comfort starting from a written problem statement rather than a fully-specced ticket


• Curiosity about AI design tools and willingness to integrate them into daily workflows


• Clear written and verbal communication, with the ability to defend design choices beyond personal taste


• Collaborative posture: shares work early, accepts feedback gracefully, and lifts teammates

Nice to have

• Experience designing for consumer or family audiences in travel, education, e-commerce, or healthcare


• Familiarity with WCAG accessibility standards and responsive design across web and mobile


• Light front-end literacy such as reading HTML/CSS or understanding component constraints


• Prior contribution to a design system

• Salary range of $80,000–$120,000 USD for Massachusetts and Virginia locations
