ficonTEC Service is seeking a Senior R&D Engineer – Optical Fiber Interconnects (m/f/d) to advance next-generation fiber interconnect technologies and transform innovative concepts into robust industrial solutions. You’ll identify opportunities, take initiative, and drive topics forward with ownership in a hands-on laboratory environment.

Join a globally oriented photonics automation leader working on AI data centers, HPC, and next-generation optical I/O technologies.

Qualifikationen

• Master's degree in photonics, physics, electrical engineering, telecommunications, mechanical engineering or related field.
• At least 5 years of professional experience in photonics, fiber optics, optical packaging, telecom/datacom, or high-precision automation.
• Experience coordinating technical activities, mentoring colleagues, or leading project deliverables is advantageous.

Aufgaben

• Drive development of advanced optical fiber interconnect technologies and automated manufacturing solutions.
• Own technical work packages and R&D projects with clear execution and measurable progress.
• Develop, evaluate, and industrialize hardware concepts and assembly processes for fiber handling.
• Plan experiments, analyze results, and translate findings into product improvements.
• Work hands-on in the laboratory, including prototyping, characterization, and validation.
• Collaborate with customers, researchers, suppliers, and cross-functional teams to turn innovations into manufacturable solutions.
• Mentor junior engineers and technicians and foster a results-oriented culture.
• Contribute to technology scouting, future concepts, and roadmaps for optical fiber interconnects.
• Act as a technical driver by aligning stakeholders and maintaining development momentum.

Your profile

• Master's degree in Photonics, Physics, Electrical Engineering, Telecommunications, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field
• At least 5 years of professional experience in photonics, fiber optics, optical packaging, telecom/datacom, or high-precision automation
• Experience coordinating technical activities, mentoring colleagues, or taking responsibility for project deliverables is an advantage
• Hands-on mindset and enthusiasm for experimental development work
• Enjoy working hands-on in the laboratory and using experimental approaches to solve challenging technical problems
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
• Demonstrated ability to take ownership, drive topics proactively, and turn ideas into tangible results
• High intrinsic motivation, curiosity for technology development, and the persistence to overcome technical challenges
• Ability to motivate colleagues, maintain momentum in development projects, and contribute to ambitious team goals
• Excellent English communication skills

Your responsibilities

As a Senior R&D Engineer, you will play a key role in advancing next-generation fiber interconnect technologies and transforming innovative concepts into robust industrial solutions. Beyond technical execution, you are expected to identify opportunities, take initiative, and drive topics forward independently. You bring a strong sense of ownership, challenge the status quo, and help transform promising ideas into measurable results.

Working at the interface of photonics, automation, and product development, you will combine hands-on engineering with technical ownership and a strong drive for innovation.

You will:

• Drive the development of advanced optical fiber interconnect technologies and highly automated manufacturing solutions for fiber optic cable assemblies
• Take ownership of technical work packages and R&D projects, ensuring effective execution and measurable progress
• Develop, evaluate, and industrialize new hardware concepts, assembly processes, and manufacturing approaches for fiber handling and integration
• Plan and execute experiments, analyze results, and translate findings into practical product and process improvements
• Work hands-on in the laboratory, including prototyping, characterization, validation, and process optimization
• Collaborate with customers, research partners, suppliers, and interdisciplinary teams to transform innovation into manufacturable solutions
• Mentor junior engineers and technicians while fostering a results-oriented engineering culture
• Contribute to technology scouting, future product concepts, and technology roadmaps for optical fiber interconnects
• Act as a technical driver by aligning stakeholders, challenging existing approaches, and maintaining development momentum
