The new Multipurpose Terminal in the Port of Trieste for Container, RoRo, General Cargo and Project Cargo. The terminal, located in the heart of the Adriatic, is to accommodate growing demand and to become the future interchange platform between sea and rail on the intersection of Baltic, Adriatic and Mediterranean railway.

Senior Planner
Purpose of the job

The Senior Planner is responsible for leading and coordinating all planning activities related to vessel schedule, berthing planning, vessel operations, yard allocation, and rail movements within a container and RORO terminal. This role ensures optimal berth utilization, efficient cargo flow, and alignment between operational plans and real‑time execution. The Senior Planner provides strategic oversight, operational decision‑making, and cross‑department leadership to support safe, efficient, and cost‑effective terminal performance.

As Senior Planner should be able to act as Planner and Yard Strategist if required.

Responsibilities
  • Develop and maintain berth plans for all arriving vessels, ensuring optimal quay utilization, safe mooring conditions, and alignment with operational priorities.
  • Coordinate with shipping lines, agents, and internal teams to confirm ETA/ETD, berth windows, and vessel requirements.
  • Monitor vessel schedules and adjust berth plans based on operational changes, delays, weather conditions, or equipment constraints.
  • Ensure accurate and timely communication of berth and vessel plans to execution teams and external stakeholders.
  • Lead the creation of vessel stowage plans for container and RORO vessels, ensuring safe, efficient, and compliant loading and discharge operations.
  • Validate load lists, discharge lists, and special cargo requirements in coordination with shipping lines, vessel planners, and cargo control teams.
  • Monitor vessel progress and adjust plans to maintain productivity and minimize turnaround time.
  • Develop and maintain yard strategies to ensure optimal space utilization and cargo flow for import, export, transshipment for Containers, RO-RO units and General Cargo.
  • Allocate yard positions based on vessel schedules, cargo priorities, DG segregation rules, and operational constraints.
  • Monitor yard capacity, identify bottlenecks, and implement proactive measures to maintain fluid operations.
  • Provide clear instructions to yard supervisors and equipment operators regarding stacking strategies and cargo positioning.
  • Plan and coordinate rail operations, including train loading/unloading sequences, wagon allocation, and cargo positioning.
  • Ensure alignment between rail schedules, yard availability, and customer requirements.
  • Communicate rail plans to rail operators, gate teams, and yard execution staff.
  • Monitor rail performance and adjust plans to maintain service levels and minimize delays.
  • Work closely with Cargo Control, Gate Operations, Execution, and Commercial teams to ensure alignment between planning and real time operations.
  • Participate in daily operational briefings, shift handovers, and coordination meetings.
  • Provide senior level support during operational disruptions, equipment breakdowns, or vessel schedule changes.
  • Ensure all planning activities comply with safety standards, IMDG regulations, and terminal procedures.
  • Analyse operational data to identify inefficiencies and develop improvement initiatives across berth, vessel, yard, and rail planning.
  • Lead continuous improvement projects aimed at reducing re handles, improving productivity, and enhancing service reliability.
  • Maintain accurate records of plans, operational changes, and performance indicators for reporting and audits.
  • Support the development and optimization of planning tools and TOS functionalities.
  • Mentor and guide junior planners, supporting skill development and knowledge transfer across planning disciplines.
  • Provide operational leadership during peak periods or complex vessel/rail operations.
  • Support onboarding and training of new planning staff in TOS usage, planning methodologies, and terminal procedures.
Requirements
Education & Experience
  • High school diploma. A college degree in Logistics, Operations Management, or related discipline is an advantage.
  • Requires intermediate English writing and speaking. Fluency and/or advanced level in an advantage.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in terminal operations, vessel planning, yard planning, or rail logistics.
  • Experience in a senior or supervisory planning role is preferred.
  • Strong understanding of port logistics, cargo handling equipment, and multimodal operations.
Technical Skills & Knowledge Required
  • Strong knowledge of container and RORO terminal operations, including berth, vessel, yard, and rail planning processes.
  • Proficiency in TOS and digital planning tools.
  • Solid understanding of IMDG regulations, DG segregation rules, and port safety standards.
  • Ability to interpret berth plans, stowage plans, yard layouts, rail schedules, and operational forecasts.
  • Strong analytical skills for evaluating operational data and identifying improvement opportunities.

  • Fluent spoken and written Italian is a must.
