Stax Talent is working with a well-funded deep tech company in the energy sector to hire a senior mechanical engineer for its superconducting magnet programme.
The opportunity
Our client is developing large-scale superconducting magnet systems for a next-generation energy application. The engineering team is experienced and growing, and the programme is moving from early development towards larger prototype hardware.
This is a hands‑on ownership role. You'll take responsibility for the mechanical side of magnet and cryogenic hardware, and you'll have a real influence on how the engineering function develops.
What you'll be doing
- Leading the mechanical design of magnet structures, supports, cryostats, vacuum enclosures and test equipment.
- Designing for demanding combined loads: electromagnetic, thermal and pressure.
- Taking hardware from concept and analysis through manufacture, assembly and testing.
- Setting technical direction for CAD and simulation work, and reviewing others' designs.
- Contributing to wider system-level design and to the company's engineering processes and standards.
We're looking for
- A degree in mechanical, aerospace or a related engineering discipline, or equivalent experience.
- 5+ years of mechanical design experience on high-load structures, in industry or research, with real hardware feedback.
- Proven ownership of components or assemblies through design, build and test.
- Strong analytical skills: hand calculations plus FEA (ANSYS, Abaqus, COMSOL or similar) under combined mechanical and thermal loading.
- Solid 3D CAD skills, plus fluency with drawings, tolerances and fits.
- Confidence making and documenting engineering decisions with incomplete information.
- Fluent English. German is not required.
Highly relevant backgrounds
- Superconducting or high-field magnets, for example accelerator, medical imaging or research magnets.
- Cryogenic, vacuum or pressure vessel design, ideally including code-based design.
- Electrical machines or other systems with large electromagnetic loads.
- First-of-a-kind hardware development in a scale-up, research lab or advanced engineering environment.
What's on offer
- Technical ownership and the chance to shape a growing engineering team.
- Challenging, first-of-a-kind hardware with real-world impact.
- A competitive package and modern office and lab facilities.
