Job summary

Scalable Capital is seeking a Senior Kotlin/Java Software Engineer focused on Banking Payments. You will build and evolve core payment services, design domain models and APIs, and operate cloud-native workloads on AWS in autonomous teams.

You will contribute to the payment lifecycle, ensure security and reliability, and collaborate with cross-functional partners to deliver scalable financial services across Europe.

Qualifications

• Backend services experience in Kotlin or Java with Spring Boot.
• Strong understanding of Domain-Driven Design and translating complex processes into models.
• Experience with distributed, event-driven systems and APIs.
• Cloud-native development on AWS, including containerised and serverless workloads.
• Automated testing, CI/CD, infrastructure as code, and production observability.

Responsibilities

• Build and evolve payment services using Kotlin/Java and Spring Boot.
• Develop services across the payment lifecycle: initiation, validation, execution, status, returns, reconciliation.
• Design domain models, APIs, and event-driven workflows connecting products with internal/external systems.
• Write clean, secure, well-tested code with focus on correctness and resilience when moving money.
• Operate cloud-native apps on AWS with ECS and Lambda workloads.
• Shape reliable delivery with IaC, CI/CD, observability and monitoring.
• Work in autonomous cross-functional teams using agile practices, DDD, reviews, tests and CD.
• Own ideas from concept to production delivering measurable value and improved reliability.

Responsibilities

• Build and evolve business-critical payment services using Kotlin, Java and Spring Boot, enabling customers to move money reliably through SEPA while supporting the wider banking platform.
• Develop services across the payment lifecycle, including initiation, validation, execution, status handling, returns, exception management and reconciliation.
• Design clear domain models, APIs and event-driven workflows connecting customer-facing products with internal systems and external banking partners.
• Write clean, secure, well-tested and maintainable code, with particular attention to correctness, resilience and traceability when moving money.
• Develop and operate cloud-native applications on AWS, including containerised services on ECS and event-driven workloads on Lambda.
• Shape reliable delivery and operations with infrastructure as code, CI/CD pipelines, observability and monitoring.
• Work in autonomous, cross-functional teams using agile practices, Domain-Driven Design, code reviews, automated testing and continuous delivery.
• Take ownership from idea to production, delivering measurable value while improving quality, automation, reliability and developer experience.

Qualification and Experience

• Strong experience building backend services with Kotlin or Java and Spring Boot.
• A solid understanding of Domain-Driven Design and the ability to translate complex business processes into clear software models.
• Experience designing and operating distributed, event-driven systems and APIs.
• Familiarity with cloud-native development on AWS, especially containerised and serverless workloads.
• Confidence with automated testing, CI/CD, infrastructure as code and production observability.
• A quality and security mindset, with attention to reliability, maintainability and operational ownership.
• Clear communication skills and a collaborative, pragmatic approach to solving problems.
• An interest in complex financial workflows or the curiosity to learn them quickly. Exposure to SEPA payments or payment processing would be a plus.
• A university degree in a relevant field of study (e.g. computer science, engineering, sciences, ...) or a comparable qualification.
